Product Carbon-Passport Board Examiner — Process Manufacturing

The mandate

The board repeatedly asks whether a proposed digital passport will make product carbon claims decision-grade or simply publish lifecycle calculations whose supplier inputs, allocation and version are opaque. Commercial teams want customer-ready records, while plants and Procurement operate with changing energy, yield and raw-material evidence. Directors need an investment position that survives assurance and product change.

The examiner will reserve two days monthly for chair preparation, supplier and management challenge, plus review of a platform or customer-claim paper, and attend six committee meetings. A written view on a material evidence dispute is expected within two German business days. Lifecycle calculation, assurance testing or vendor selection requires separate commissioning.

The appointment runs twelve months from January 2027. At month ten, the committee will assess whether accountable teams can apply the passport evidence principles independently. A new term requires a full-board vote, refreshed standing question and conflict review; management cannot extend the role, carry time forward or turn advisory access into implementation oversight.

This examiner has no line authority, executive responsibility, assurance opinion, commercial approval, methodology ownership or procurement vote. Advice challenges boundaries and evidence but cannot certify a claim or passport. Product, Sustainability, Finance and authorised assurance providers retain decisions, and the appointment cannot be represented as compliance validation.

Up to three other appointments are permitted with disclosure of work for suppliers, customers, lifecycle-platform providers, assurance firms, standard setters and investors. Compensation from a shortlisted provider or participation in a counterparty’s competing methodology may require recusal. Another client’s product factors or contract evidence cannot be reused as anonymous benchmarks.

Why the board wants this voice

Directors understand manufacturing and sustainability commitments but lack a practitioner who has operated product-level carbon evidence through recipe, plant and supplier change. Vendors emphasise interoperability and reporting teams emphasise methodology. The board wants an independent voice who can test whether the passport supports real product and customer decisions rather than a static disclosure layer.

• Press directors to define which design, sourcing, pricing, customer and compliance decisions each passport must support.
• Test source, factor, allocation, plant, recipe, batch, supplier and methodology versions behind product-level calculations.
• Challenge claims that aggregate modeled supplier or average plant evidence without communicating material uncertainty and coverage.
• Shape investment gates around reproducibility, assurance cost, supplier correction, product change and customer decision usefulness.
• Probe platform lock-in where proprietary factors, calculation logic or passport identifiers impair audit and orderly exit.
• Frame scenarios involving supplier restatement, recipe substitution, recycled-content dispute, plant-energy change and customer challenge.
• Coach the committee to distinguish data evidence, lifecycle method, assurance opinion and accountable commercial claim.

Candidate qualifications

• Led production product-carbon or digital-passport platforms in chemicals, materials, automotive, electronics or complex process manufacturing across several plants.
• Reconstructed product footprints across supplier, plant, recipe, yield, allocation and factor changes at effective time.
• Challenged a customer-facing claim after modelled or averaged evidence proved weaker than its apparent precision.
• Compared lifecycle and passport platforms without commercial attachment to their software or assurance services.
• Presented product-carbon investment and evidence limitations to boards, customers or regulators.
• Managed conflicts across manufacturers, suppliers, assurance firms, standard setters, platforms and investors.

Non-negotiables

• Able to attend all six Frankfurt meetings and preserve two advisory days monthly for the fixed term.
• Will disclose supplier, customer, assurance, platform and standards interests before receiving product evidence.
• Accepts that methodology, assurance, commercial and compliance decisions remain with authorised client functions.
• Must bring operating product-level evidence; enterprise emissions reporting alone is insufficient.
