The mandate

The board’s standing question is whether to fund a neutral-atom laboratory and commercial partnership around large tweezer arrays when impressive atom counts do not yet establish usable gate fidelity, calibration throughput or operating duty. Proposals assume defect-free rearrangement, stable lasers and transferable control software while underpricing vacuum, optical and specialist staffing. Directors need a scale thesis that separates addressable physics from sustainable system operation.

The adviser contributes four days monthly, attends quarterly Riyadh board sessions and joins the planned Paris, Munich, Boston and Singapore laboratory reviews. Each month, one scaling claim is reconstructed from atom source through loading, rearrangement, state preparation, gates, readout and recalibration. Written counsel is available within three working days before a partnership or capital gate, without assuming laboratory management or scientific direction.

The appointment lasts twelve months with no automatic renewal. If a named laboratory demonstration is delayed, the chair may re-sequence one review within the existing term; unused days do not roll into programme delivery. Any later appointment requires a fresh board question, conflict review and defined cadence rather than continuation as standing research supervision.

The adviser has no line authority and carries no executive responsibility for modality choice, laboratory design, scientific hiring, partnership awards or capital. Research leaders and the board retain those decisions. The adviser may challenge evidence, recommend staged demonstrations and expose scaling constraints, but cannot direct experiments, select principal investigators, negotiate grants or represent performance to investors.

Conflicts include neutral-atom, trapped-ion and superconducting companies, laser and vacuum suppliers, universities, quantum funds, patents and government research programmes. Employment, board positions, equity, grants, royalties and paid scientific review must be disclosed. A new role with a proposed partner or competing modality during the term requires committee review and may require recusal.

  • Compare single-system expansion, modular links and distributed laboratory options through interface and operating evidence.
  • Advise demonstration gates with raw-run disclosure, reproducibility, staffing, facility load and explicit falsification conditions.
  • Stress partnership economics against equipment concentration, specialist talent, intellectual property and continued external dependence.
  • Leave the board a scale map, capital stages, partner conflicts, facility assumptions and scientific stop conditions.

Candidate qualifications

  • Advised neutral-atom or comparable quantum hardware programmes from scientific demonstration toward repeatable system scale.
  • Can evidence an atom- or qubit-count claim materially revised after loading, duty or calibration was included.
  • Understands optical tweezers, atom rearrangement, Rydberg gates, lasers, vacuum, readout and calibration constraints.
  • Has evaluated laboratory build-versus-partner decisions involving scarce infrastructure and specialist scientific teams.
  • Translated conditional quantum evidence into staged capital without promising commercial fault tolerance.
  • Maintained independence amid startup equity, patents, grants, laboratory appointments and competing quantum modalities.

Non-negotiables

  • Will attend Riyadh and all four international laboratory reviews in the advisory calendar.
  • Holds no undisclosed equity, patent, grant or board role tied to a proposed quantum partner.
  • Accepts no authority to choose modalities, direct experiments, hire scientists, award partnerships or commit capital.
  • Brings direct neutral-atom or closely comparable experimental-system judgment beyond quantum-market strategy.
