Aluminium Smelter-to-Extrusion Sourcing Board Adviser mandate in Oslo, Norway · European Building-Envelope Systems
A European building-products group needs a ten-month board adviser to challenge aluminium source choices across smelter emissions, alloy conversion, extrusion qualification, capacity and CBAM exposure.
The mandate
The committee repeatedly reviews aluminium sourcing as a choice among premium, emissions and regional capacity, but proposals combine smelter output, recycled feed, casthouse billet, extrusion presses and qualified finishes that mature on different clocks. A low-emissions ingot is not useful if alloy conversion or extrusion capacity cannot make approved profiles; a cheap billet may carry CBAM exposure or source evidence that changes landed economics. Directors need a portfolio challenge spanning physical and carbon pathways, not a shipment-control redesign.
Six formal supply-and-sustainability committee sessions and four smelter, casthouse or extrusion reviews are distributed across the ten-month appointment. Each month’s three retained days support source-case scrutiny, one portfolio challenge, private chair preparation and closure of prior actions. Within one Norwegian business day of a volume reservation, source substitution or material-carbon proposal, the adviser identifies the unresolved conversion and evidence gates; the full board position follows by the third. Authorised functions own every regulatory, technical and commercial conclusion.
Ten months are reserved for the source-strategy decision and two CBAM supply-and-cost exercises. Closure comes when executives can apply the portfolio logic to a new smelter-to-extrusion pathway; delayed qualifications, open negotiations and changing certificate exposure stay in line ownership without extending the adviser or creating procurement duties. Any future service needs a separately stated board question, demonstrated internal use, renewed conflicts and a fresh committee vote.
The adviser has no line authority and carries no executive responsibility for alloy specification, product qualification, supplier award, volume reservation, price, hedging, CBAM filing, certificate purchase or customer claim. Engineering, Procurement, Finance, Sustainability and Legal retain those powers. The adviser may challenge whether a source pathway is executable and recommend board conditions, but cannot select a smelter or approve an emissions value.
Work for smelters, traders, recyclers, casthouses, extruders, energy suppliers, carbon verifiers, certificate intermediaries or competitors must be disclosed. A conflict involving a source, region or product family requires recusal from the complete decision. Compensation cannot depend on award, metal premium, certificate exposure, qualification or later transaction work, and confidential volume positions cannot support outside trading.
Why the board wants this voice
Procurement sees offers, Engineering sees profiles, Sustainability sees source emissions and Finance sees future landed cost, while the board needs one view of how those conditions join. No current director has operated from smelter through extrusion and customer qualification under constrained supply. Independent challenge can distinguish a strategic pathway from a collection of individually plausible contracts.
What you will own
- Press management to map each proposed source from energy and smelter through alloy, billet, extrusion, finish and product.
- Test capacity for feedstock, casthouse route, press size, die, yield, finishing, qualification and customer timing.
- Challenge emissions and recycled-content claims whose source, allocation, assurance or product inheritance remains unclear.
- Probe landed economics for metal premium, conversion, freight, yield, CBAM inputs, certificates and disruption consequence.
- Observe four source-chain interfaces and compare reserved tonnes with qualified profile output available by programme date.
- Shape exercises for smelter loss, billet shortage, extrusion bottleneck, emissions correction and customer demand shift.
- Give the chair a source-pathway map, decision cases, conflict register and annual aluminium-portfolio challenge agenda.
Candidate qualifications
- Held senior aluminium supply, conversion or product authority spanning smelter, casthouse, extrusion and customer qualification.
- Has rejected apparently attractive metal supply because alloy route, press capacity, finish or qualification was not executable.
- Understands primary and recycled feed, billet, alloy, extrusion, yield, source emissions and landed cost operationally.
- Can challenge CBAM-sensitive sourcing without assuming tax, legal, certificate, Engineering or Procurement authority.
- Has inspected capacity and source evidence across producers, processors and qualified industrial products.
- Advised boards through a long-term aluminium commitment under simultaneous cost, carbon and physical constraints.
Non-negotiables
- Can attend six Oslo sessions and complete four smelter, casthouse or extrusion reviews in ten months.
- Will disclose smelter, trader, recycler, processor, energy, verifier, competitor and investor relationships before access.
- Brings smelter-to-product aluminium depth; commodity trading or carbon reporting alone is insufficient.
- Accepts no specification, qualification, award, price, filing, certificate, claim or board-voting authority.
- 49 words maximum. Describe aluminium tonnes you excluded after extrusion or product qualification broke the source case.
- 49 words maximum. Which smelter, trader, extruder or verifier relationship could require your recusal?
- 49 words maximum. What conversion constraint can make low-emissions ingot irrelevant to a customer programme?
