GCC Technical-Career Evidence Board Adviser mandate in Amsterdam, Netherlands · Scientific Instruments and Diagnostics
A scientific instruments company needs a ten-month board adviser to rebuild India technical careers after principal titles multiplied without scarce-skill evidence, global decision scope or credible fellow succession.
The mandate
India attrition prompted rapid promotion into principal and distinguished roles, but many incumbents lack product-wide decisions, external technical standing or evidence of multiplying other experts. European fellows remain gatekeepers for architecture and research choices while managers use titles as retention currency. The board needs a defensible technical-career system tied to genuine authority, contribution and succession across hardware and software disciplines.
Two adviser days per month follow an evidence docket containing one level, discipline or contested promotion cohort. The ten-month programme includes four committee sessions and four laboratory, product or India reviews where claimed technical scope can be observed. Individual appeal handling is excluded from cadence; systemic weaknesses revealed by appeals are summarised for the chair without naming employees unnecessarily.
The appointment expires after directors approve the evidence architecture and disposition transition risk in month ten. Any extension to observe the first promotion cycle requires a new independence declaration, explicit sample and separate board vote. The adviser will not become a permanent member of the fellow-selection panel.
There is no line authority or executive responsibility for promotions, compensation, performance, succession, organisation design or technical decisions. Managers propose people, calibrated panels decide levels and the board governs policy. The adviser can challenge criteria and panel evidence but cannot score an individual, promise a title or direct a development assignment.
Conflicts include coaching or assessing named candidates, serving executive-search firms, advising competitors, supplying assessment tools or holding interests in universities and partners used as evidence. These ties and any prior authorship of current criteria must be disclosed before a docket is opened. Placement fees and compensation linked to promotion outcomes are forbidden.
Why the board wants this voice
Managers face immediate retention pressure, senior fellows protect standards they largely defined and candidates reasonably distrust opaque global comparisons. Internal talent teams can run calibration but cannot independently determine what enterprise technical authority should look like. An experienced engineering-career architect can help directors restore credibility without selecting winners.
What you will own
- Challenge level definitions across technical decisions, product consequence, originality, external standing, mentorship and organisational reach.
- Test principal and fellow evidence against observed architecture, research, failure-recovery and cross-discipline contributions.
- Expose titles granted mainly for retention, tenure, team size or proximity to overseas decision makers.
- Examine parity across hardware, firmware, optics, data and systems disciplines without forcing identical evidence forms.
- Shape India access to global assignments, laboratories, customers, publications and councils needed to demonstrate scope.
- Probe panel composition, dissent, recusal, evidence decay and review rights for fairness and technical credibility.
- Frame transition choices for incumbents, future promotions, development gaps and source-country fellow succession.
Candidate qualifications
- Designed technical-career architecture for a global scientific, medtech or deep-engineering organisation spanning hardware and software.
- Distinguished enterprise technical authority from management span, individual brilliance, tenure and short-term retention need.
- Calibrated principal or fellow evidence across India and established research centres without importing geographic bias.
- Repaired title inflation while retaining scarce experts through meaningful scope, assignments, recognition and succession.
- Built panels with credible technical challenge, transparent evidence, conflict handling and disciplined dissent.
- Advised boards independently of candidates, search firms, assessment vendors, universities and current fellow incumbents.
Non-negotiables
- Can complete four committee sessions and four laboratory, product or India evidence reviews in ten months.
- Will disclose candidate, coaching, search, assessment-tool, university, competitor and partner relationships.
- Brings global technical-career governance across India and research hubs; generic job architecture is insufficient.
- Accepts no role in individual scoring, promotion, reward or development assignment decisions.
- 49 words maximum. Describe a principal-level criterion you changed after observing that titles carried no consequential technical decision.
- 49 words maximum. Which candidate, assessment or coaching relationship could require your recusal from a docket?
- 49 words maximum. What evidence should distinguish a global engineering fellow from an exceptional local specialist?
