Managing Director and Business Unit Head, Renewable Energy mandate in Mumbai, India · Renewable Energy Advisory and Engineering
Lead the renewable-energy business of a confidential engineering and advisory platform, owning strategy, P&L, client acquisition and technical-commercial delivery across solar, wind, BESS and hybrid solutions for C&I, EPC and investment stakeholders.
The mandate
A confidential engineering and advisory platform brings together finance, engineering, consulting and business-management capabilities for concessionaires, contractors, corporates, financial institutions and investors. The organisation is appointing a senior executive to lead its renewable-energy business, with accountability for strategy, P&L, market development, client acquisition, delivery quality and organisational capability across India.
The portfolio spans solar, wind, battery energy storage systems and hybrid-energy solutions. It serves clients whose Commercial and Industrial, EPC, investment or procurement decisions require engineering, financial, contractual and regulatory considerations to be reconciled. The Managing Director and Business Unit Head must diagnose the client's energy, sustainability, reliability and cost priorities before shaping a proposition; the role is not a mandate to sell one predetermined technology.
The appointee will lead the conversion of opportunities into well-defined assignments and will govern the quality of feasibility studies, technical evaluations and financial models. Assumptions affecting ROI, LCOE, tariffs, PPAs, open access, net metering and grid integration must be visible and tested. Qualified engineers, lawyers and regulatory specialists retain their professional conclusions; the business leader ensures that those conclusions are brought together coherently for the client's decision.
This is an open-ended permanent appointment based in Mumbai with pan-India client and project travel. The title describes operating leadership of the business unit and does not by itself create a statutory directorship. Commercial commitments, discounts, investments and risk positions remain subject to the organisation's delegated approval framework, and neither the role nor its team may promise a particular return, tariff, approval or project outcome.
What you will own
- Translate the approved business plan into market priorities, service propositions, account strategies and execution choices, selecting areas where the organisation can build a defensible renewable advisory and engineering position.
- Own business-unit revenue, contribution, costs, resource deployment and forecast discipline, connecting pipeline probability and proposal economics with delivery capacity, project progress and cash implications.
- Build senior relationships across corporates, C&I users, EPC participants, financial institutions, investors and contractors, diagnosing the underlying energy requirement before proposing a technical-commercial route.
- Lead significant proposals and negotiations, defining scope, assumptions, deliverables, dependencies, schedules, fees and acceptance criteria so that commitments made during origination remain executable after award.
- Govern feasibility studies, technical assessments and financial models for solar, wind, BESS and hybrid projects, requiring transparent inputs and sensitivities around ROI, LCOE, tariff and delivery risk.
- Guide the evaluation of PPAs, energy-procurement structures, contractual risk allocation and project economics, integrating finance, engineering, commercial and regulatory perspectives without displacing their qualified owners.
- Track national and state policy developments, including open access, net metering and incentives, translating changes into timely client advice and internal market choices while referring formal interpretations appropriately.
- Establish review gates for major assumptions, models, reports and recommendations, intervening where scope drift, unresolved dependencies or resource conflicts threaten turnaround, quality or client confidence.
- Recruit, develop and lead consultants, analysts and project managers through explicit accountabilities, technical-commercial exposure and performance feedback, building sufficient leadership depth to sustain growth.
- Represent the organisation in senior client discussions and appropriate industry forums, using market intelligence and completed work to strengthen the service portfolio and build recognition through substantive expertise.
Candidate qualifications
Bring at least fifteen years of business-development, consulting or closely related leadership experience in renewable energy, including at least five years in a senior leadership position. Direct C&I or independent power producer exposure is strongly preferred, and your evidence must distinguish personal accountability from participation in a larger pursuit or delivery team.
Demonstrate meaningful P&L responsibility and the ability to create an executable plan, qualify opportunities, win complex mandates, set pricing and resource priorities and manage delivery economics after award. Be ready to explain a renewable opportunity you changed or declined because its assumptions or risk allocation were unsound.
Show strong technical-commercial fluency across solar, wind, BESS, hybrid solutions and grid integration. You need not replace discipline specialists, but you must be able to challenge feasibility inputs and explain how technical choices affect ROI, LCOE, tariffs, schedule and client risk.
Bring practical understanding of energy policies, incentives, PPAs, open access, net metering, tariff negotiation and contract management. Your experience should show how a policy or regulatory change altered a client recommendation or market plan and when specialist interpretation was required.
A bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, environmental science or a related discipline is required; an MBA is preferred. Executive communication, negotiation and people leadership must be demonstrated through complex stakeholder decisions and the development of multidisciplinary teams.
