Vice President, Technical Accounting and Interpretations mandate in Lisbon, Portugal
Confidential Vice President, Technical Accounting and Interpretations in Lisbon, Portugal, reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer. Permanent Finance & Accounting appointment at Vice President level, an ongoing appointment; full time.
The mandate
The Vice President will lead the permanent interpretation of novel and high-consequence accounting questions, ensuring facts are complete, alternatives genuinely considered and decisions usable beyond a single reporting date. The appointment differs from broad policy stewardship: it is the senior case authority for matters that do not fit routine guidance and for external developments requiring a timely enterprise position.
During the first hundred days, the leader will assess the active consultation pipeline, ageing decisions, recurring fact gaps and the quality of issue papers. A triage model will separate urgent reporting questions, emerging interpretations, implementation topics and matters that belong to another function. The VP will establish a service standard that rewards early escalation rather than heroic last-minute answers.
Within delegated authority, the appointee may approve interpretations, require alternative analysis, seek specialist input and mandate consistent application to analogous facts. Reserved conclusions stay with the Chief Accounting Officer. Legal, valuation, tax and commercial owners remain accountable for their facts and specialist views.
By month six, consultation papers should enter review with verified facts, accountable sponsors and clear deadlines. At twelve months, repeat questions should increasingly be answered through indexed precedent, while genuinely novel issues reach governance earlier. The leader will expose uncertainty and dissent rather than treat technical accounting as advocacy for a preferred result.
The VP will build a bench of technical directors through graduated authority, joint paper reviews and chaired case simulations. Success includes a credible successor for core forums and business-facing accountants who know when a fact pattern has crossed from routine application into interpretation.
What you will own
- Establish risk-based intake and triage for novel accounting questions, with facts, sponsor, decision owner and deadline confirmed.
- Direct issue papers to address authoritative basis, alternatives, contrary evidence, consequence and reconsideration triggers.
- Approve conclusions within delegation and present reserved matters with a reasoned recommendation.
- Monitor external interpretations and determine where local guidance, adoption activity or no action is appropriate.
- Maintain a fact-sensitive precedent index and prevent analogy from replacing current analysis.
- Measure consultation ageing, late escalation, repeat questions and post-decision correction.
- Coordinate legal, tax, valuation and assurance input while preserving the ownership of each contribution.
- Develop technical directors through calibrated delegation and observed governance leadership.
Candidate qualifications
- Demonstrate executive accountability for novel accounting interpretations under at least one major framework.
- Provide a case where your preferred initial view changed after contrary facts or a better alternative emerged.
- Show personally authored papers accepted by senior accounting and audit governance.
- Explain how you differentiated a technical-accounting issue from a commercial, legal, valuation or control matter.
- Evidence useful precedent design that remained sensitive to changes in fact pattern.
- Quantify improvement in consultation timing or quality after changing intake and triage.
- Show development of other professionals into trusted technical decision makers.
Working terms and boundaries
- This permanent full-time role holds delegated interpretation authority and an explicit first-year capability agenda.
- Reserved decisions remain with the Chief Accounting Officer; specialist owners retain responsibility for non-accounting opinions.
- Incentives reward decision quality, timely escalation and leadership depth, not a high volume of central consultations.
- Hybrid presence includes significant case forums and executive or audit governance sessions.
- Relevant standard-setting, assurance, advisory and financial relationships require conflict review.
