The interim must start within three weeks and hold the seat for eight months, spanning source reconciliation, model and alert control, pre-season exercises, peak readiness and successor induction. Recruitment begins after a sixty-day source-clock baseline. Four weeks are reserved for overlap; the assignment will not extend for a national sensor replacement or unrelated emergency-management modernisation.

Handover requires every priority cluster to resolve sensor identity and calibration, observation geometry, source and receipt time, transformation, fusion-model version, confidence, analyst intervention, alert and later correction. The successor must command unseen source-delay and smoke-obscuration exercises, while scientific and emergency leaders accept residual sensor coverage, communications and historical-calibration limitations.

The authority may quarantine sources, suspend automated prioritisation, impose confidence labels, reprioritise compute, direct the authorised A$34 million recovery and appoint temporary platform owners. Scientists retain forecast and fire-behaviour interpretation; incident controllers decide operational response and public warnings. The interim cannot command an incident, issue an evacuation, certify sensors, hire permanently or approve excess spend.

New sensor procurement, firefighting operations and redesign of public-warning policy are outside scope. The leader may require dependable evidence feeds and continuity paths but will not substitute a fused signal for field or professional judgement. Recovery is bounded to temporal and spatial integrity, explainable prioritisation and controlled human use within the existing hazard-intelligence service.

  • Govern recovery against source latency, reconstructable clusters, analyst override quality, degraded-mode continuity and recurring uncertainty.
  • Transfer command through pre-season and peak exercises plus successor acceptance of coverage, communications and calibration debt.

Candidate qualifications

  • Held executive wildfire, meteorological, Earth-observation or civil-hazard intelligence platform authority during consequential operating seasons.
  • Reconstructed fused hazards from satellite, weather, camera, lightning and field sources with incompatible clocks and uncertainty.
  • Suspended or qualified automated prioritisation when source delay, obscuration or calibration evidence undermined operational usefulness.
  • Worked with scientists and incident controllers without presenting model confidence as forecast approval or emergency command.
  • Governed geospatial correction and public-service continuity through degraded communications and rapidly changing environmental conditions.
  • Handed a recovered hazard platform to permanent leadership through adversarial pre-season and source-loss exercises.

  • Available within three weeks for Sydney leadership and travel to control centres during pre-season and severe-weather exercises.
