The mandate
Two missed weekend collections filled spent-grain silos at the flagship brewery, while a feed receiver rejected warm material whose batch and collection times could not be reconciled. Yeast destined for an approved processor was then routed on a generic waste docket, obscuring both value and lawful disposition. Production curtailed one brew and paid emergency wet-load haulage. The co-product logistics head is absent after an investigation. The interim takes live network command while brewers, laboratory teams and authorised compliance specialists retain product classification, food or feed eligibility and environmental judgments.
The appointment begins within ten days and runs nine months through peak production, receiver requalification and permanent recruitment starting in month two. The first seventy-two hours protect vessel and silo capacity, establish confirmed pickups and separate eligible, held and rejected batches. By day twenty-one, every load must have batch source, generation time, temperature or other required condition, vehicle, destination and receiver acceptance. Months two through five reset production-to-collection schedules, wet-load capacity, contingency routes and commercial reconciliation. Months six and seven exercise a receiver closure and carrier shortfall; the final phase transfers command during a full production cycle.
Handover is complete when a named successor has chaired eight daily and four monthly reviews, four breweries complete twelve consecutive weeks without co-product-driven brew curtailment, and feed, biogas or other approved receivers reconcile six dispatch cycles with no unexplained custody or weight gap. The successor receives receiver specifications, batch holds, seasonal generation curves, silo limits, transport lead times, rejection history, emergency routes, value and disposal economics, compliance dependencies and a ninety-day capacity calendar. The interim remains accountable until the successor manages one live rejection from containment through accepted alternative disposition.
Within existing permits, approved receiver categories and a EUR14 million recovery envelope, the interim may reserve tippers or tankers, sequence collections against brewing plans, hold a load, redirect eligible material among prequalified receivers, procure emergency storage, suspend a carrier or receiving partner, settle documented waiting charges and commission calibrated weighing or temperature checks. Changing classification, releasing held material for feed, approving a new receiver, altering a laboratory specification, terminating a strategic contract, changing production recipe or spending above delegation requires Quality, environmental, legal, procurement or committee approval.
Beer production decisions, raw-material sourcing, product release, animal-feed certification, waste classification and new processing-plant design are outside scope. Recovery cannot extend a collection timestamp after delay, blend rejected material into a conforming batch, describe dispatched weight as beneficially used, or conceal residue and emergency disposal inside average revenue. The interim must protect brewing continuity while preserving laboratory and receiver authority, make each accepted or rejected tonne economically visible, and leave a durable operating rhythm rather than dependence on personal carrier calls.

The disruption showed that the brewer treated co-products as predictable outbound volume even though condition, receiver window and wet-haulage capacity decay at different speeds. An experienced executive must reconnect brewing schedules to physical outlet capability immediately. The board wants recovered continuity and truthful disposition, not a sustainability narrative that moves uncertainty beyond the brewery gate.
What you will own
- Build a live co-product ledger linking brew or fermentation batch, generation window, vessel or silo capacity, measured condition, collection booking, vehicle, receiver eligibility, weighbridge result and final acceptance.
- Set daily collection priorities from brewing consequence, material deterioration, laboratory hold, receiver window, vehicle suitability, route time and lawful fallback rather than headline offtake value alone.
- Direct carriers and approved receivers within delegation, retaining missed slots, demurrage, temperature deviations, wet-weight adjustments, rejected loads and emergency disposal as explicit events.
- Reconcile spent grain, surplus yeast and each other approved stream separately so different specifications, containment, hazards, economics and receiver permissions never disappear inside aggregate diversion.
- Establish decision playbooks for silo saturation, severe weather, vehicle contamination, feed-receiver closure, biogas outage, weight disagreement and production-plan change, with named escalation owners.
- Test recovery through brewery-floor observations, vehicle inspections, receiver witnessing, batch-to-ticket samples and simultaneous outlet-and-carrier loss during a high-volume brewing week.
- Recruit and coach the permanent leader, transferring commercial disputes, receiver evidence, contingency costs, capacity thresholds, compliance interfaces and the next production-season decisions.
Candidate qualifications
- Has held executive responsibility for brewery, distillery, food-process or comparable wet co-product logistics tied directly to continuous production.
- Can evidence recovery after missed collection or receiver rejection threatened plant continuity and exposed weak batch-level custody.
- Understands spent-grain and yeast generation, short condition windows, silo constraints, wet-load equipment, receiver specifications, weighbridge reconciliation and offtake economics.
- Has redirected material under time pressure while preserving laboratory, feed, environmental and legal release authority.
- Can distinguish generated mass, held batch, dispatched load, receiver-accepted co-product, beneficial use, rejected fraction and lawful final disposition.
- Has handed a recovered multi-site outlet network to permanent leadership after live receiver loss and transport-capacity tests.
