Travertine Essayist: a technology leader's case, set on warm stone
Travertine Essayist pairs the Signature collection's Essayist composition with the Travertine palette, a pale limestone page with dark umber type. The composition opens the home page with an essay, not a job title. Its default leader is Nadia Marin, a fictional chief information officer at Ravessa Supermercados, a listed grocery chain with 618 stores across seven Spanish regions. Her essays argue that till replacements should follow the trading year, that forecasting models should admit uncertainty and that every store should be able to sell when its connections fail.
The cover: an essay in the main column, the author in the margin
The home page opens as a two-column cover. The wide right-hand column belongs to the newest essay. A small line in the accent colour gives its topic, the date and an estimated reading time; beneath it the title is set very large in italic, followed by the standfirst and the essay's first paragraph, which begins with a dropped capital. A link invites the reader to continue the essay.
The narrow margin, ruled at the top, introduces the author: the portrait, a line reading Chief Information Officer / Europe, her name in the display face, the first sentence of her biography, what she is open to and a contact link. For Nadia, that sentence places her in Brașov in 1998, writing till software for shops that had just been required to use fiscal printers. A visitor meets her claim about trading calendars first and then learns why a former till programmer would hold it.
On a phone the order reverses. The essay arrives first, and the margin follows beneath it with a small portrait floated beside the author's details, so the argument still leads.
What follows the cover on the home page
Under the cover, a centred band headed The enduring idea sets her philosophy between two fine rules as a large quotation: a supermarket has to be able to sell on its worst day. Next comes Further reading, which numbers her other essays 02 and 03, on fresh-food forecasting and store resilience. Three headline figures follow: €4.32 billion of net sales, 5,240 checkouts moved to a new till platform and 97 per cent of card payments completed during a processor outage.
The authored home record comes next, with a centred thesis, a three-paragraph introduction, four proof points, her current focus and the conversations she welcomes. A section titled The record behind the perspective lists her subsidiary directorship and charity trusteeship beside her formation, and quotes the chair of her audit committee. A dark umber contact band sits just above the footer.
Career chapters and a readiness essay
The career page keeps a narrow centred column under the heading Chapters of an executive life. Each role opens with the word CHAPTER, its number and the dates, then a large italic heading, followed by the role's scope, outcomes and narrative. Nadia's six roles move from a Brașov software house through an Austrian grocery group's Romanian subsidiary and its Salzburg headquarters to a Madrid drugstore chain and two posts at Ravessa. Set as chapters, a career that crossed four countries reads as one continuous story.
Board Readiness becomes An essay on my board contribution. Her contribution, three judgement examples and first-year approach run as prose, and the committee preferences, exposure, twenty-four available days and governance learning sit in a bordered notes panel at the foot of the page. Essay pages enlarge the body text, carry a byline and a pull quote, and link to the previous and next essays.
Travertine in Newsreader and Instrument Serif
The Travertine palette sets dark umber type on a warm limestone ground, with sand-coloured panels, tan rules and a tobacco-brown accent for dates, labels, links and the dropped capitals on essay pages. The code loads Newsreader for headings, essay titles and the essay body, and Instrument Serif for running text and the margin notes.
Those choices suit the people who read a CIO's case. Audit committee chairs, nomination committees and search partners at consumer companies want judgement about risk, cost and trading, and Nadia's argument is that technology serves the shop floor. A light, printed-looking page avoids the dark look of technology suppliers and gives a long paper on cutover nights the weight of a board document.
Who else the design suits
The Essayist suits any leader whose strongest material is a developed argument that runs against habit: a chief operating officer defending a slower network rollout, a general counsel writing about disclosure after an incident, or a chief financial officer arguing over how a cost should be presented. Travertine's warmth also suits leaders in food, hospitality and consumer goods. Every design works for all ten roles, and the same composition is available in nine other Signature palettes.
Questions about this design
- Can a technical subject work in such a literary layout?
- Yes, if the essay argues a business question. Nadia's lead essay concerns trading days, lost baskets and a vendor's deadline, not software features, so the cover reads as business judgement.
- Can a European leader use euro figures and EU regulation here?
- Yes. Nadia's pages use euro figures with their year, Spain's Good Governance Code for listed companies and the GDPR described in general terms. State which figures describe the company and which describe your own budget or team.
- Which part of my writing carries the home page?
- The title, standfirst and first paragraph of your most recent essay fill the cover, and your biography's first sentence fills the margin. Both must make sense alone; an opening paragraph that only sets the scene leaves the cover thin.
- Can I preview this design with another leader's story?
- Yes. Change the designation, industry or market and the same cover fills with a different fictional leader's essay and record; resetting the choices brings back Nadia Marin. Where a market version is not yet written, a note says which story is shown.
