Travertine Index: a utility marketer's case, set out like a schedule

Travertine Index pairs the Signature collection's Index composition with a pale stone palette. Its default leader is Leela Mehta, a fictional chief marketing officer of a Pune-based city gas distributor that brings piped gas and CNG to seven tier-2 areas of India. She argues about what a utility should count, how safety should be taught and why factories convert on evidence, and the layout presents each argument as a numbered line before any biography.

The opening schedule

The home page begins with a two-part header ruled off by a heavy line. A narrow left column, in small type, gives the role title, the location and the words Practice / Perspective. The right column carries a very large headline announcing an index of ideas.

Below the header sits a genuine table with three columns, captioned with her name and the phrase Published perspectives. Each row gives a two-digit number, the essay title as a link, and the subject with an estimated reading time. The first row rests on a slightly darker sand tint, which marks the newest essay without a badge. For Leela that row reads A registration is not a kitchen, followed by her essays on teaching gas safety and on how foundry owners decide. Phones drop the subject column.

Why a city gas marketer suits a numbered register

Leela's marketing is closer to accounting for behaviour: whether a household still cooks on gas sixty days after connection, whether a family can find its meter valve, whether a CNG queue has shortened. Titles that already state a claim read well as numbered entries, and a register implies that each claim can be checked against the record behind it.

That matters to her readers: a nomination committee or search partner wants to see how she reasons before trusting her figures, and the inner pages supply the decisions, costs and dates.

The practitioner row and the record beneath

After the table comes a three-part band headed The practitioner. Her portrait sits on the left. In the middle sit her name, the opening paragraph of her biography, what she is open to and a way to get in touch. The right column numbers her areas of practice, from piped-gas adoption to dealer economics.

Because only that first paragraph appears here, it carries a great deal. Leela's describes her mother checking an LPG cylinder with soapy water every Sunday in Nagpur, which explains in a few lines why her safety work is built around habits rather than warnings. Headline measures follow: households cooking on the company's gas, average daily volume and the size of her team. Further down come her thesis, proof points and current focus, then a short record band with her formation and an endorsement.

Travertine: cream, sand and umber with an engineered type pairing

Travertine sets dark brown text on a warm cream ground. Panels and the leading table row use a deeper sand, fine rules are a muted tan, and a burnt-umber accent picks out numbers, captions and links. Headings are set in Work Sans, a plain grotesque, and running text in IBM Plex Mono, so dates, figures and labels have the even rhythm of a meter reading or a site register.

The effect is calm and practical rather than glossy, suiting an audience of foundry owners, municipal engineers and board members as well as households. On essay pages a thick umber rule runs down the left edge of the opening and the body text switches to the display face at a comfortable reading size.

Career and readiness as numbered entries

The career page, headed as an index of executive responsibility, gives each role a large number, a date column and a body with scale, reporting line, team, budget, outcomes and the reason for moving. Leela's six roles run from a stove maker in Vidarbha through a water-purifier subsidiary, an LPG marketer and a listed Gujarat gas distributor to her present company.

The Board Readiness page places two outlined boxes side by side: committee preferences and time commitment in one, exposure and governance learning in the other. A heavier rule then introduces her reasoning, judgement examples and first-year approach. Her exposure is labelled exactly: she presents to the board and reports to its safety committee, holds no directorship, is registered with the IICA databank and offers twenty-five days a year.

Who else the design suits

Travertine Index suits leaders whose authority rests on a few well-argued positions and a record that can be checked: a chief customer officer at an electricity distributor, a strategy head in renewable power, a CFO who has changed how a company reports, or a general counsel with views on compliance design. Its pale palette also prints well, for leaders whose pages circulate as PDFs before a board meeting.

Questions about this design

What does the home page show if my essays are not ready yet?
The table of essays is replaced by your headline and thesis, and the practitioner band and measures follow as usual. The composition is built to list arguments, though, so it is worth drafting at least two essays with titles that make a claim.
Is a monospaced body typeface hard to read in long essays?
Not here. IBM Plex Mono carries labels, figures and short passages, while essay bodies are set in Work Sans with generous line spacing, so long reading stays comfortable.
Can an Indian utility or energy executive use local units and regulators?
Yes. The demonstration uses crore and lakh, standard cubic metres a day, March financial years and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, the Companies Act and the SEBI Listing Regulations, each tied to a dated figure.
Can I see this design with another leader's story?
Yes. The designation, industry and market controls load another leadership lens into the same composition, and a reset returns to Leela Mehta. A lens without its own India story yet shows the global version with a short note that an India version is in preparation.
