Sandstone Field Notes: a leadership website that reports from the site
Sandstone Field Notes belongs to the Signature collection's horizon composition, which presents a leader as a correspondent whose views were formed in particular places on particular days. Its default leader is Nisha Wijaya, the fictional chief operating officer of Selvanta Industrial Parks Limited, a Singapore-listed owner of five industrial parks in Vietnam and Indonesia. Her three essays open with datelines from Hai Phong, Bac Ninh and Batam. The design is arranged so that those places, and the operating decisions taken in them, are the first things a visitor meets.
A field heading and the lead dispatch
The home page begins with a slim heading row. On the left, the words Field notes and the leader's name are set in the display face; on the right, in small olive capitals, sit her role and location. Below it, a wide column carries the lead dispatch: an eyebrow reading Dispatch 01 with her location, then the essay's topic, date and reading time, then the essay title as the largest type on the page, its standfirst and a link to read the dispatch.
For Nisha the headline is a claim, that a contractor fails in its payables before it fails on site, drawn from the year she spent finishing eighteen factories at Hai Phong after a main contractor walked away. A search partner meets her through an argument about contractor cash before seeing a job title, which is exactly how an operating leader would want to be judged.
A portrait captioned like a photograph from the field
To the right of the dispatch, behind a fine vertical rule, the portrait sits with a caption beneath it in the manner of a photographer's note: her name, her location, the languages she works in, what she is open to and a contact link. Nisha's caption lists English, Bahasa Indonesia, Javanese and working Vietnamese, and states that she welcomes board and speaking conversations. For a career that crosses Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam, that single line does real work. On a phone the column becomes a compact row, with a small portrait beside the caption under the headline.
Further dispatches, a conviction and three measures
The structure can show a horizontally scrolling career rail beneath the dispatch, built from short career entries a member adds. Nisha's demonstration keeps her history on the dedicated Career page instead, so the home page moves straight to Further reading: dispatches 02 and 03, numbered, each with topic, date, reading time and summary. One argues that electricity, not land, is what an industrial park really sells; the other that a data hall on Batam should be sized to the island's water rather than to the tenant's request.
Her standing conviction follows as a quotation, about trusting what can be seen from the site gate. Three measures close the section: S$684 million of group revenue, 286 tenants and a lost-time injury frequency rate of 0.31. A record band then lists her two subsidiary boards and her engineering formation, with a remark from the chair of Selvanta's risk committee.
Career and readiness pages written as dispatches
The Career page is titled Field notes from an executive career. Each of Nisha's six roles is laid out in two columns. A sand-coloured panel on the left gives the dates and the geography of that employer, from the industrial estates around Surabaya to a Hanoi office running three parks, and the right-hand column sets out the title, company scale, reporting line, team, financial scope, mandate, outcomes, the decisions in context and the reason for each move. The page ends with what she is looking for next.
Board Readiness opens with The boardroom territory I know and her contribution between two rules. A sand-coloured register on the left holds the committee table, showing her ready to chair a risk, safety or sustainability committee after a year, alongside twenty-five available days, two subsidiary directorships and her governance learning. The wider column carries three judgement examples: a crane collapse she reported although nobody was hurt, twelve hectares declined to a tenant whose wastewater the park could not treat, and a related-party design contract put out to tender.
Sandstone: sand, olive and a survey notebook's type
The Sandstone palette sets deep olive-black text on a warm sand ground, with darker sand for panels and an olive accent for datelines, labels and links. Headlines use Instrument Serif, whose single regular weight gives an essay title authority without shouting. Running text and the record pages use Sora, a geometric sans-serif that keeps megawatts, cubic metres and dollar figures easy to read at small sizes. The effect is closer to a well-kept survey notebook than a corporate brochure.
That restraint suits Nisha's readers: nomination committees and search partners in Singapore and across ASEAN, and the owners, operators and contractors she compares practice with. They are used to reading site reports, and they are suspicious of polish.
Who else the design suits
The Field Notes composition works for any leader whose authority comes from places as much as positions: chief executives of construction and energy businesses, operators of ports, hospitals or plants across several countries, regional managing directors in emerging markets, and finance or technology leaders who write from the floor of the business rather than the head office. As with every design in the collection, it suits all ten leadership roles. It rewards essays that begin somewhere specific, and it asks for a career record in which each employer's geography is stated clearly.
Questions about this design
- Do my essays need datelines to use the Field Notes design?
- No. The layout prints each dispatch's number, topic, date and reading time on its own. But essays that open in a named place and month read most naturally here, as Nisha's do, and they give a reader a reason to trust the argument that follows.
- What decides the headline on the home page?
- The first essay in your journal becomes the lead dispatch, so its title is the largest line on the site. Put your strongest, most defensible argument first, and write its title as a claim that a board member could agree or disagree with.
- Can a leader in another role or market use this design?
- Yes. The designation, industry and market controls show other leadership lenses in the same composition, and a reset returns to Nisha Wijaya. A lens whose own story is still being prepared shows the global version with a clear note.
- How should a multi-country career present money and units?
- Name the currency on every figure and keep it consistent for each kind of number. Nisha reports group results in Singapore dollars and contracts in US dollars, and gives power in megawatts and water in cubic metres, because the record pages print those facts exactly as written.
