Obsidian Policy Brief: lead with a paper, then show the evidence behind it

Obsidian Policy Brief is a Signature design in the Policy Brief composition, which presents a leadership website the way a research institute presents a paper: a title, an abstract, findings and the fields of practice behind them. Its default leader is Karthik Srinivasan, the fictional chief product officer of a listed Gurugram company that has moved from home inverters into rooftop solar for households and small factories in tier-2 and tier-3 India. His opening paper argues that a subsidised rooftop system is unfinished until the distribution company has fitted the net meter.

A byline band, then the paper itself

The home page opens with a narrow band. On the left sit the role and location in small sand-coloured capitals, Karthik's name in the display serif and his headline beneath it. On the right a small portrait sits in a fixed frame, so the face supports the byline rather than dominating it. Below the band the surface changes. A lighter navy panel, topped by a thick sand-coloured rule, carries the label Leadership paper / 01, the essay's topic, date and reading time, and then the essay title as the page's main headline.

Under the headline is a definition list with a single term, Abstract, and the essay's standfirst set in a larger serif, followed by a link to read the full paper. For Karthik it states in two sentences the claim the rest of his site tests: commissioning is not the customer's finish line.

Findings and numbered fields of practice

After the paper come three figures under the heading Experience in figures: solar revenue of ₹1,020 crore in the year to March 2026, more than 1.12 lakh residential systems installed since 2021, and 11 first-year service tickets per 100 systems. Each carries a label and a line of context, so the reader sees the period and the comparison rather than a bare number.

The next block sets a short heading column, Mandate, beside a numbered list of six fields of practice, from customer discovery in small towns to the consent-based use of data from connected inverters. Numbering makes the list read like the sections of a brief, which suits a product leader whose work spans hardware, lending and field service.

Further reading and the authored record

Further reading lists the second and third essays with their summaries: one argues that small-town households buy reliability in the evening rather than kilowatts, the other that installers belong in the product organisation. The Signature finish then gives Karthik's thesis, a three-paragraph introduction, four proof points, his current focus and the conversations he welcomes, before a closing record of his subsidiary directorship, his education and an endorsement from his managing director.

Each essay has its own long-form page, opening on the lighter panel with a byline and standfirst and closing with a pull quote drawn from the body. The journal index marks its title with a sand rule down the left edge.

Obsidian: blue-black, cream and sand

Obsidian sets cream text on a blue-black ground, with raised panels in a lighter slate and a pale sand accent for rules, labels and links. Source Serif 4 carries the name, headings and abstracts; IBM Plex Mono sets the running text and labels, giving every page the measured, typed feel of a briefing note. That suits Karthik's readers. Nomination committees, search partners and product peers in energy want evidence before style, and a quiet dark page with a typewriter texture reads as a document to study rather than a brochure to skim.

The same choices serve other leaders whose work is technical but whose audience is not: utility executives, infrastructure operators, risk officers and engineers moving into general management. On a phone the portrait shrinks to a thumbnail beside the byline and the abstract stacks beneath its label.

Career and Readiness as appointment papers

The Career page presents each role as a bordered appointment with a shaded header, numbered Appointment 1 to Appointment 6 with its dates. Karthik's record runs from a Coimbatore service engineer's job in 1998 through agricultural pumps, satellite television and shop-counter lending to Dhruvanta, and each entry gives the employer's scale at the time, reporting line, team, budget, mandate, outcomes and reason for moving.

The Readiness page opens with a findings grid: what he would bring to a board on the wider side, with committees and time commitment beside it. A second grid sets boardroom judgement and first-year approach against exposure and governance learning. It records that he presents to his board and reports to its Risk Management Committee without being a member, and has registered with the IICA databank but not yet taken the proficiency test. Both pages print black on white for a committee pack.

Questions about this design

Does the Policy Brief suit a leader whose work is mostly hardware or operations?
Yes, if there is an argument to put in the paper. Karthik's first essay is about net meters and subsidy files, not software. Choose a decision you would defend before a sceptical committee and let the abstract state it in two sentences.
What does the home page show before I have written an essay?
The paper panel falls back to your headline, with your leadership philosophy in the abstract position under the label Perspective. The composition is built around an argument, so most Signature members draft a first essay before they publish.
Can the design carry Indian figures, schemes and regulators?
Crore and lakh figures, Indian financial years and regulators' names set without special formatting. As this demonstration does, keep any subsidy programme or net-metering rule general unless you are sure of its detail.
Can I view this layout with another leader's story?
Yes. The designation, industry and market controls show a different leadership lens in the same composition, and the reset returns to Karthik Srinivasan. Where an India version of a lens is still being written, the page shows the global story with a short note.
