Indigo Essayist: a hospital operator's argument on the opening page

Indigo Essayist pairs the Signature collection's Essayist composition with the Indigo palette. Its default leader is Imogen Wallace, the fictional chief operating officer of Kelvarra Health, a not-for-profit group of twelve private hospitals and four day-surgery centres in Queensland and northern New South Wales. She trained as a radiographer, ran eleven rural public hospitals and now co-leads her group's negotiations with health insurers. Her essays argue that an insurer contract is really an operating plan, that theatre time belongs to waiting patients, and that regional private hospitals should do fewer things beside the public hospital.

A cover that opens on the insurer argument

Imogen's home page does not begin with her job title. The wide right-hand column carries her most recent essay, The insurer contract is an operating plan, set in large italics under a small line giving its topic, its September 2026 date and its reading time. Her standfirst follows, then the essay's first paragraph with a drop capital: the image of operations receiving an insurer agreement the way farmers receive the weather. A link invites the reader to continue.

The narrow left margin introduces the author. Her portrait sits above a line naming her role and market, her name in the display face and a single sentence from her biography, about a film processor failing at two in the morning while a trauma patient waited. On a phone the essay comes first and the margin follows, with the portrait floated beside her details.

Beneath the cover: a principle, two essays and three figures

A centred band titled The enduring idea sets Imogen's philosophy between fine rules: that a hospital keeps three promises at once, to the patient, the doctor and the fund. It links to her expertise page, where those promises become six areas of practice. Further reading then numbers her remaining essays 02 and 03, on theatre sessions and regional hospitals, each with its summary. Three headline figures follow: A$1.18 billion of revenue, 81 per cent of booked theatre time used, and agency nursing at 3.8 per cent of hours.

The authored record completes the page: her thesis, three introductory paragraphs, four proof points from the Wyralee contract to the Rockhampton partnership, and her current focus on hospital-in-the-home care. A panel titled The record behind the perspective lists her community-transport directorship and her formation beside her board chair's endorsement.

Seven chapters and a board essay

The career page runs as a book of chapters in a narrow, centred column. Each appointment is labelled CHAPTER with its dates, then titled in italics, so Imogen's record reads from the group COO's office back through Kelvarra Brisbane North, a private imaging network, rural hospital management and an imaging department to her first on-call X-ray room in 1994.

The Board Readiness page is headed Ready for a quality and safety committee, and its chair in time. Her contribution and three judgement examples, including stepping out of a negotiation with her former employer, read as continuous argument. Her committee preferences, exposure, twenty-five available days and governance learning sit in a bordered notes panel at the foot, where a nomination committee chair can check them quickly or print them.

Indigo: aubergine type on lavender

Indigo sets deep aubergine ink on a pale lavender page, with a plum accent for dates, labels, links and the drop capital, a muted mauve for secondary text and lilac hairlines between sections. The code loads two serifs. Newsreader is the display face: it sets the headings, the italic essay titles, the drop capital and the long essay body. Instrument Serif carries the running text, the margin notes and the small capitals of the essay labels.

The palette suits the people who will read Imogen's pages: chairs of aged-care and community-health boards, insurer negotiators and senior clinicians. All of them are wary of anything that looks like hospital marketing. A light, quiet, literary page makes her argument about contracts and staffing read as considered judgement, and it prints cleanly for a committee pack.

Who else the design suits

Indigo Essayist suits leaders whose strongest evidence is a position they have acted on and can defend: a chief nursing officer arguing for staffing measures boards rarely see, a finance director at a charity explaining why it reports some costs differently, or a chief executive defending a narrower strategy than the sector expects. It needs an opening paragraph strong enough to stand alone, because that paragraph carries the cover. Every design works for all ten roles, and the Essayist is also offered in other Signature palettes, darker and lighter.

Questions about this design

Why does the cover lead with an essay instead of Imogen's title?
The Essayist assumes that a board reader will judge an operator by her reasoning before her rank. Imogen's title, market and record are all present, but in the margin and further down the page, so the first thing a reader meets is her argument about insurer contracts.
Can an Australian leader use A$ figures and a June financial year?
Yes. Imogen's pages use Australian dollars, financial years such as 2025–26, state and Commonwealth funding described in general terms, and the governance language of the Corporations Act and charity regulation. Date every figure so readers know which year it belongs to.
Will a lavender page print well for a nomination committee?
The career and readiness pages carry their own print styles, and the Indigo palette's dark aubergine type on a pale ground keeps strong contrast on paper. The bordered notes panel on the readiness page is designed to be read in a printed pack.
Can I see this layout with a different leader's material?
Yes. Change the designation, industry or market and the same Essayist cover fills with another fictional leader's essay, record and readiness page. Resetting the choices brings back Imogen Wallace, and a short note explains when a market-specific version has not yet been written.
