Graphite Study: a rural bank operations chief, read from the margin inwards

Graphite Study is the Signature collection's Study composition in the Graphite palette. Its default leader is Mei Liu, a fictional vice president and chief operating officer of Xuantang Rural Commercial Bank, formed when eleven county banks and credit cooperatives in central China merged in 2023. Her subject is the controls a bank places between rural and older customers and their money: fraud restrictions, outlet closures and loan paperwork. The design lets a visitor meet that subject as an argument first, with the person beside it like a note in a book's margin.

Opening the site on a frozen account

On a desktop the home page divides into a narrow left column and a wide right one. On the right, beneath a double rule in sage, a small label reads From the study, followed by the essay's subject, Fraud controls and customer redress, with its date and reading time. The headline is Mei's lead essay title, which argues that a restricted account is a decision the bank still owes an answer on. Her standfirst sits under it in a larger serif, and a bracketed [1], set like a footnote marker, opens the full essay.

The left column carries her portrait in an arched frame, her name, her title and market, what she is open to and a link to write to her. Below a thin rule comes her philosophy in italic: her father kept a credit cooperative's ledgers by hand and would not call an entry wrong until the customer had seen every line. On a phone the order reverses, so the essay arrives first and the portrait shrinks to a small arch floated beside her name.

Two further essays, three figures, then the person

Beneath the opening, a section titled On the reading table lists her other essays as references [2] and [3]. One holds that an outlet closure should be tested on pension day rather than an average Tuesday; the other that loan paperwork can be centralised while credit judgement stays in the county.

Three figures follow, each with its basis: RMB 214 billion of assets for the merged bank, 5.1 million personal customers and a three-day median release for wrongly restricted accounts. An About the author panel then repeats the opening of her biography, the abacus and the hand-checked vouchers. Her thesis, introduction, four proof points and current focus follow. A closing record lists her village-bank directorship and her two degrees, with a quotation from the independent director who chairs her board's consumer rights protection committee.

Why charcoal, sage and a reading serif suit her readers

Graphite sets warm paper-white text on a charcoal ground, with raised panels one step lighter and rules in a muted slate green. The pale sage accent marks footnote numbers, double rules, small labels and the drop capital that opens each essay. The code loads IBM Plex Serif for headings, standfirsts, essay bodies and the italic margin note, and Jost, a geometric sans, for running text, navigation and captions.

Mei's readers are nomination committee chairs, search partners and fellow operations heads who read long risk papers for a living. Plex Serif keeps a long essay steady, while Jost holds figures clear at small sizes. The charcoal is sober without the formality of navy or black, which suits a leader whose evidence comes from queues, complaint files and counters rather than trading floors.

Inner pages that keep the margin

The journal index frames her latest essay in a double-ruled box, then groups all three by subject. The impact page carries four decisions, each with its cost: thirty-eight closures instead of sixty-one, three processing sites instead of one, a three-day clock for restricted accounts and eight-day small-business loans.

The native Career page, headed The appointments I have studied through, gives each of her six roles a main column for scope, outcomes and narrative and a ruled annotation, NOTE 1 to NOTE 6, with dates and employer. The Board Readiness page, A study in boardroom contribution, puts her contribution and judgement examples in the main column, her committee preferences and twenty-five available days in the margin, and her exposure and governance learning below a double rule, where her village-bank seat is labelled as a nominee directorship.

Other leaders this design suits

The Study rewards a leader with one argument strong enough to open the site and a biography with a clear origin. It suits operations, risk and compliance executives whose authority rests on how carefully they reason, general counsel and chief audit executives, and regional bankers, insurers or utility heads whose customers are older or rural. Graphite in particular fits leaders who want a dark, quiet page without the ceremony of black and gold.

Questions about this design

What appears at the top of the home page if I have not written essays?
The headline becomes your leadership headline and the space under it shows the first paragraph of your biography. The layout still works, but it was designed for a lead argument, so plan at least one essay before you choose it.
Can I use Chinese currency and governance terms on this design?
Yes. The demonstration uses RMB figures, the anti-telecom and online fraud law, board consumer rights protection committees and China's rules for independent directors of listed companies. Tie each figure to a date and say whether it describes the bank or your own remit.
How do the margin notes behave on a phone?
The two columns stack with the essay first and the author material after it. The portrait shrinks to a small arch beside your name, and the career annotations sit under each appointment instead of beside it.
Will the same layout show another executive's record?
Yes. Choose a different designation, industry or market and the Study shows that leader in the same arrangement; a reset brings back Mei Liu. Where an India version is still in preparation, the global story appears with a one-line note saying so.
