Cypress Columnist: a signed argument about what customers should be able to see

Cypress Columnist joins the Cypress palette to the Signature collection's Columnist composition, a layout that treats a leader the way an opinion page treats a regular contributor: face and name, then this week's argument, then the belief underneath all of them. Its default leader is Hugo Marin, the fictional chief product officer of Lisandre Audio SA, a Euronext-listed audiobook and podcast subscription company in Lyon. A product chief is judged on choices customers can see, so a design built around one signed argument fits him closely.

Hugo's face and name before his first claim

The masthead carries his name as a wordmark and an italic edition line, Chief Product Officer · Essays & perspective. Beneath it, the byline strip places his portrait in a tall, upright frame. Beside it, a small capitalised line gives his role and his market, Europe; his name follows in the display serif; and a line headed Open to lists board appointments, advisory roles and speaking invitations. Executive opportunities are missing because Hugo intends to stay at Lisandre, and the strip says so without comment.

The meter essay as the page's only headline

The main band divides into a wide column and a narrow one. The wide column opens with the essay's topic, Subscription design and pricing, its September 2026 date and a reading time. Then the headline, set very large: Show the listener the meter you are already running. It states the claim behind his most consequential decision, replacing an unlimited plan with listening hours subscribers can see. The standfirst and a Read the essay link follow.

Across a vertical rule, the narrow column is labelled The standing conviction and holds his philosophy as a quotation: a product reveals what it values through what it shows first, what it counts and what it makes difficult. A Start a conversation link sits beneath.

From figures to the author's own first paragraph

Three figures follow, each read as number, measure, then context: 1.58m paid subscriptions, 190,000 of them sold through operator bundles; 2.8% average monthly churn; and €268m of company revenue, set beside the €29m budget he controls. Under Further reading, entries 02 and 03 carry his other essays, on giving every home-screen row an owner the listener can name and on a second front door for older listeners.

An About the author panel repeats the portrait beside the first paragraph of his biography, which begins with cassettes posted in 2001 to listeners who had missed a radio documentary. The Signature finish adds his thesis, introduction, four proof points with their costs, current focus and the conversations he welcomes, then a record showing his unpaid seat at a Lyon reading charity, a 2002 documentary prize and a trade-press interview, closed by his chief executive's account of the dissent he wrote.

Cypress green with Lora and Inter

The Cypress palette sets cream type on a deep forest-green ground, with a lighter green for panels, sage for secondary text and a pale wheat accent for dates, links, figures and drop capitals. The Columnist composition loads Lora, a serif with calligraphic roots, for his name, headlines, quotations and essay text, and Inter, a plain sans-serif, for labels, captions and figures, so euro amounts stay crisp beside headlines that feel written.

Hugo's readers are nomination chairs at mutual insurers, transport operators and utilities, search partners and fellow product leaders. A calm green page with a literary serif suggests an author who expects to be read slowly. The design would serve a broadcaster's digital director, a publisher's head of subscriptions, a museum's digital lead, or any executive who came to business from journalism and still argues in paragraphs.

Essays, appointments and the boardroom case

Each essay opens beneath a heavy cream rule with topic, title, byline and standfirst, then runs in Lora with a wheat drop capital, a pull quote in a shaded panel, a round portrait at the foot and links to the previous and next pieces. His subheads survive, so a reader skimming the essay on older listeners meets What the support line told us before the argument about accessibility law.

The Career page, headed Twenty-eight years from the studio to the product roadmap, sets each appointment in two columns, dates and employer left, title and evidence right, from Radio Clairval in 1998 to Lisandre today. The Readiness page opens with his contribution in italics, gives two-thirds of its width to judgement examples, first year, conflicts, independence and exposure, and keeps committees, twenty available days, the seat he wants and his governance learning in a ruled sidebar. His databank line reads Not yet registered, explained as an Indian scheme that does not reach a European candidate. Printed, both record pages turn to black type on white.

Questions about this design

Is the Columnist right for a product leader rather than a writer?
It suits a product leader whose decisions can be stated as positions. Hugo's lead essay is the argument he made to his executive committee about usage plans, published with its costs.
Which essay becomes the home page headline?
Whichever essay is listed first. Hugo leads with the meter essay because it explains the decision that defines his record; reorder your essays and the headline, standfirst and reading-time line follow, while the others move into the numbered list beneath.
Does it handle euro figures and several European markets?
Yes. Euro amounts, percentages and market names need no special formatting, and the location line can name a region, as Hugo's does. Tie each figure to a date and say whether it describes the company or the remit you control.
Can I view this design with someone else's story?
Use the designation, industry and market selectors to load a different leader into the same Cypress Columnist layout, and the reset control to return to Hugo Marin. Where a market version is not yet written, the global version appears with a short note.
