Signature / Copper / The Field Notes
Copper Field Notes: a dispatch first, then the places behind it
Copper Field Notes belongs to the Signature collection's Field Notes composition, which presents a leader the way a correspondent's notebook presents a story: a dated dispatch at the top, the writer beside it, and the places where the reporting was done close behind. Its default leader is Arjun Rao, a fictional CFO of a listed Vadodara engineering company that fabricates process equipment and builds industrial plants. His work happens on fabrication floors, project sites and in bankers' offices, and this layout keeps those places in view.
The home page opens on a dispatch
A thin strip crosses the top of the home page. On the left, in the display face, it reads Field notes / Arjun Rao; on the right, in small copper type, his role and market. Below it the page divides into a wide column and a narrow one. The wide column carries the latest essay as a dispatch: an eyebrow reading Dispatch 01 / India, the essay's topic, date and reading time, then its title set very large. For Arjun that headline is An unbilled rupee is a loan to the client, followed by the standfirst and a link to read the dispatch.
The narrow column, behind a fine vertical rule, holds the portrait with a caption giving his name, location, languages, availability and a contact link. On a phone the columns stack and the portrait shrinks to a thumbnail beside its caption, so the essay title remains the first thing a reader meets.
Further dispatches, a conviction and three figures
Beneath the opening, the other two essays appear as a numbered reading list, 02 and 03, each with its summary: one argues that bids should pay for the bank guarantees they consume, the other that an incentive is a conditional receipt rather than a business case. A quoted conviction follows, then three figures: revenue of ₹3,140 crore, an order book of ₹6,850 crore and net debt of 0.4 times EBITDA.
Below them come his thesis, a three-paragraph introduction, four proof points with their costs left in, his current focus and the conversations he welcomes, then a short record with his formation and an endorsement from his Audit Committee chair.
Parchment, burnt copper, Instrument Serif and Sora
The Copper palette sets dark umber text on a warm parchment ground, with raised panels in a deeper sand and fine rules in muted tan. A burnt-copper accent marks datelines, labels and links. For an industrial CFO it suggests worked metal and old ledgers without photographs of plant or machinery, and it reads as considered rather than corporate to an Audit Committee chair or a search partner.
Headlines are set in Instrument Serif, a narrow, high-contrast face that holds a long essay title at display size without crowding. Text, figures and labels use Sora, a geometric sans-serif that stays legible in ten-pixel datelines and in the crore figures that carry so much of Arjun's argument.
Career and readiness pages built around places
The Career page, headed From site accounts to the CFO's chair, place by place, treats each role as a dispatch. A shaded panel on the left gives the dates and the geography: Vadodara and Dahej, Kolhapur and Belagavi, Pune, the Nagpur works and the Odisha site office. The right side holds the scope, mandate, outcomes, reason for moving and narrative, so a search partner can follow him from a four-person site team to a listed company's finance function.
The Board Readiness page opens with his contribution between two rules, then splits. A shaded register on the left lists the committees he could chair or join, twenty-eight available days, one current directorship, his IICA databank registration and his governance learning. The wider column holds three judgement examples, his first-year approach and an exposure list that separates presenting to an Audit Committee from serving on it. Both pages print cleanly.
Essays, evidence and who else the design suits
The journal page sets its title and standfirst side by side, features the latest essay and groups the archive by topic; each essay page adds a pull quote and an author note. The profile, expertise, impact and contact pages hold the evidence: a biography that begins with conveyor idlers in the rain, five areas of practice from contract assets to related-party oversight, and four decisions with their trade-offs.
The design suits leaders whose authority comes from being where the work happens, and who write about it: plant and project directors, infrastructure and mining executives, logistics leaders, and finance or risk heads in businesses spread across sites. It needs one strong essay, because that essay is the headline. Without one, the page falls back to the headline and the biography's opening paragraph.
Questions about this design
- Why is the home page headline an essay title rather than the leader's name?
- The Field Notes composition leads with the latest dispatch, so the first essay's title becomes the headline while the name sits in the strip above and beside the portrait. Write that title as a clear claim.
- Does this design suit an Indian executive who works across several sites?
- Yes. The Career page gives each role's geography its own shaded panel, so plants, project sites and offices become part of the record, in crore figures and financial years ending in March.
- Which fonts and colours does Copper Field Notes use?
- Headlines use Instrument Serif; text, figures and labels use Sora. The palette pairs dark umber text with a parchment ground, sand panels, tan rules and a burnt-copper accent for datelines and links.
- Can I view this design with another leader's story?
- Yes. The designation, industry and market controls apply another leadership lens to the same composition, and a reset returns to Arjun Rao. A lens without its own India story yet shows the global version with a short note.
