Advantage / Obsidian / The Card

A dark card that opens onto difficult product decisions

Obsidian / The Card introduces Lanxin Yuchi, the fictional chief product officer of a Hangzhou learning app, through a portrait card set on a deep blue-black ground. Her app teaches calligraphy, singing and smartphone skills to members who are mostly over fifty, alongside children's arts courses that parents manage. Her decisions concern renewals, children's visibility and private messages, so the design needs to feel calm and trustworthy rather than promotional. This Advantage composition gives her seven pages: an introductory card that unfolds into her cases, a biography, expertise, impact, a career record built from cards, a board brief and a contact page.

A card on a dark ground, divided by a gold rule

Home opens with a bordered card in the slightly lighter Obsidian surface, lifted by a solid offset shadow in a raised slate tone. Lanxin's portrait fills the left panel above a small caption naming her role. On the right, the eyebrow 'An introduction' precedes her heading, 'The learner is rarely the one who paid', set large in DM Serif Display. A short pale-gold rule separates it from her sentence about defaults and charges making sense to the person they reach, followed by her location, availability and a link to Contact. Her name stays in the centred, letter-spaced wordmark above. On a phone the card reverses, so the words arrive before the photograph.

Approach and practice before any figure

Beneath the card, a blockquote headed 'My approach' carries Lanxin's view that a grandmother who learns and a daughter who pays both deserve an explanation. Beside it, a narrower column titled 'At the intersection of' lists her four practices: age-friendly design, separate family account roles, renewal practice and content-safety workload. Three figures follow: RMB412 million revenue in 2025, 1.38 million paying members and 214 product colleagues, each with its period and scope in Manrope beneath the number. A reader therefore meets her convictions and the scale of membership they govern before opening any case.

Three cases that open where they are listed

Under 'Work worth discussing.', each decision appears as a numbered summary that expands when selected: the one-yuan trial that renewed itself, the children's practice wall and messages between unconnected adults. Summaries use display type with a pale-gold numeral, and opened text holds a comfortable reading width in the muted grey-blue. Because every case states what was given up, from RMB14 million of first-year revenue to two departing teachers, anyone who opens one finds the cost beside the benefit. The Impact page repeats all three in continuous form.

A light invitation closes a dark page

After the cases, Home continues with Lanxin's thesis, a three-paragraph introduction, proof points, current focus and the conversations she welcomes. A leadership-record band then shows her formation and a colleague's endorsement. The closing invitation uses the palette's inverse colour, which in Obsidian is warm ivory, so the final panel reverses the tone of everything above it. Her openness to one board role at twenty days a year sits inside that panel with a route to Contact.

Career cards and a framed board brief

Career begins with an ivory heading panel carrying her name, role and location, then six appointment cards on the slate surface. Each holds dates, title, company, reporting line, team, budget, mandate, outcomes and narrative, tracing her path from a text-message content provider in 2001 to her present remit. Board Readiness opens with a bordered two-column summary placing her contribution beside committee interests and commitment. Exposure, judgement examples, first-year approach and governance learning follow in a narrower column. On small screens both pages settle into one column, and printed career cards keep each heading with its content.

Why this palette suits her readers, and who else it suits

Lanxin's readers are chairs, nomination committees and search advisers judging whether she can be trusted with questions about children and older customers. Near-black blue, ivory text and a restrained gold accent read as serious without severity. DM Serif Display gives her headings a measured, literary voice, while Manrope keeps labels and figures clear at small sizes. The same design would suit a general counsel in consumer services, a payments company's chief risk officer or a hospital's patient-experience director: anyone whose record turns on protecting people who depend on decisions made elsewhere.

Questions about this design

Is a dark design harder to read for a long biography?
Obsidian pairs ivory text with a deep blue-black background, and secondary text uses a lighter grey-blue rather than a faint tone. Lanxin's biography and cases are set in moderate line lengths. Check a printed copy of your Career page before circulating the link.
Why is the Home heading not the leader's name?
In this composition the card's main heading carries a short phrase from the leader's own thesis, while the name stays in the wordmark and in the record header of the Career and Board Readiness pages. Lanxin's heading states her central idea in eight words. Choose a phrase that belongs only to your record and that a reader would remember.
Can a keyboard user open the Home page cases?
Yes. The cases use native disclosure controls, so a keyboard user can move to each numbered summary and open it. Each summary is a complete decision title, letting a reader choose without opening all three. The Impact page presents the same text without disclosure controls.
How should a product leader in another sector adapt Lanxin's content?
Replace her learner, payer and guardian with the roles in your own product, and keep the discipline of stating what each decision cost. The renewal, children's safety and messaging examples are fictional and belong to this demonstration. Describe your own organisations and decisions with the same precision, using figures you are entitled to publish.
