Advantage / Obsidian / The Panorama

A wide opening for a career spent looking ahead of clients

Obsidian / The Panorama is built for a leader whose value lies in seeing a change before it reaches the accounts. Its default leader is Arjun Menokil, a fictional chief strategy officer at Varunthal Engineering Services, an NSE- and BSE-listed engineering research and development company in Pune. Arjun's argument is that a client building its own engineering centre should be planned for, not resisted. The design gives that argument a broad landscape opening, a dark and quiet palette, and two record pages that let a search partner or nomination committee check every claim against dates, scope and figures.

The opening: a name, a sentence and a wide frame

The homepage leads with Arjun's name in Source Serif 4 at a very large size, followed by his headline about a client's own centre becoming the next contract. Below it, a two-column landscape pairs the first sentence of his philosophy, set as a large quotation, with a portrait cropped to a five-by-three frame from the top of the image. His availability for board and advisory roles and a contact link sit under the quotation, and the portrait caption simply reads India. Three figures follow: ₹2,840 crore of company revenue, 11,600 people across three Indian centres and the 52 per cent of revenue still drawn from mobility clients.

From areas of practice into the authored argument

The Panorama can show a horizontal career rail on the homepage when short chapter summaries are supplied. Arjun's site leaves the summaries out, so his six dated appointments are kept for the Career page rather than compressed. The homepage moves instead to a strip headed A broader perspective, listing his four areas of practice separated by slashes, with a link to the Expertise page. His thesis, three introductory paragraphs and three proof points follow: the transferred engineering centre, the dependence on vehicle programmes that fell short of the board's aim, and the Coimbatore centre that lost more than planned.

Why obsidian and gold suit a strategy record

The Obsidian palette uses a deep blue-black background, warm ivory text and a pale gold accent. For Arjun's readers, mostly company chairs, search partners and fellow executives, the effect is composed and unhurried, closer to a board paper read in the evening than to a sales page. The gold is reserved for dates, numbering, the career index and the timeline rule, so the eye finds structure quickly. Source Serif 4 carries the name, headings and quotations with an editorial weight that suits a writer of five-year plans. Manrope sets the body text and the small dated links.

Profile, Expertise and Impact for a strategist

The Profile page opens with the heading The person behind the decisions, then sets a narrow portrait column beside a wider biography column in this composition. Arjun's biography runs from a pump-repair workshop in Palakkad to twenty-five years on the supplier side. Expertise numbers each authored area: anticipating captive centres, balancing three industry segments, choosing engineering locations and reporting strategic risk to a listed board. Impact repeats the headline figures before three numbered cases, each recording who disagreed and what Varunthal gave up.

Career and Board Readiness on the Panorama's own terms

The Career page begins with a row of dated links, one for each appointment, so a reader can jump straight to 2008 or 2019. Each role then hangs from a single gold vertical rule marked by a small dot, giving the record the feel of a horizon line read from left to right and top to bottom. Arjun's six roles show reporting lines, team sizes and revenue or budget responsibility before his statement of the seat he wants next. Board Readiness places his contribution beside his commitment of twenty-four days a year, then sets his two judgement examples and first-year approach against a committee matrix, his subsidiary directorship, his IICA databank status and his governance learning.

Who else this design suits

The Panorama works for leaders whose story is about anticipating a shift: strategy officers, corporate development heads, founders of business-to-business services firms and general managers who have moved between buyer and supplier. The dark palette suits a reserved, analytical voice and portraits with clear lighting against a plain or softly blurred background. It is less suited to a career that needs many images or a long publishing record, since Advantage carries no essays. Choose it if you are willing to show a shortfall as clearly as a success.

Questions about this design

Why does Arjun's homepage not show the scrolling career rail?
The rail appears only when short career summaries are provided. Arjun's full chronology lives on the Career page, where each appointment has scope, reporting line and outcomes. This keeps his homepage focused on the argument.
Is a dark palette harder to read on a phone?
The Obsidian colours keep strong contrast between the ivory text and the blue-black background, and Manrope is used for body text at readable sizes. On narrow screens the landscape section becomes a single column and the portrait height is limited, so the quotation and availability appear before the image.
Can I use this design if I have never served on a listed board?
Yes. Arjun's directorship was on a special-purpose subsidiary, and his Board Readiness page says so plainly. The committee matrix and exposure list label each item by the capacity actually held, such as presenting to a board or reporting to a committee, so limited experience can be shown honestly.
What should an Indian leader prepare before personalising it?
Gather revenue and headcount figures for your company, the scope of each role, three decisions with their costs, and your IICA databank status. Check any statement about independence or directorship limits with qualified advice, and describe it in general terms if you are unsure of the detail.
