Advantage / Obsidian / The Record

A night-dark ledger for an executive whose work is judged in bad weather

Obsidian / The Record is an Advantage design that places a leader's evidence in a measured, ledger-like order on a deep blue-black ground. Its default leader is Vivienne Sinclair, the fictional chief operating officer of Brannockmere Home Energy, a family-owned company that delivers heating oil and propane and installs heat pumps across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Her subject is keeping houses warm through the hardest cold while customers buy less fuel. It reads like an operations file a chair might take home before an interview.

What a chair sees before scrolling

The home page opens with a square portrait in a narrow left column, labelled as a leadership record. Beside it, the large serif heading carries Vivienne's argument about the coldest night rather than her name, which stays in the masthead wordmark. Beneath sit her role and country, a one-line positioning statement, her availability for board appointments and a link to discuss one. The masthead frames her role title in a thin gold border and separates the page links with slashes, so navigation reads like the tabs of an index. On a phone the portrait shrinks to a small mark beside its label.

Four figures that say what they measure

Headline figures follow, each set as figure, then measure, then context. C$486 million of 2025 revenue is labelled as mostly fuel sales priced from wholesale markets, so commodity pass-through is not mistaken for her remit. The other three sit closer to what she controls: 74,000 customer accounts, 3,140 heat pumps commissioned by in-house crews in 2025, and 93 per cent of winter no-heat calls answered within four hours. A band titled At the board table then lists her volunteer directorship at Hearthward Fuel Fund, and her philosophy closes the opening as a pull quotation in the gold accent.

Her argument in outlined boxes

Below the opening come her thesis in large type, three paragraphs on a company whose fuel business is shrinking, and three proof points. This composition sets proof points in outlined boxes, which suits evidence that each carries a cost: a sales cap that gave up about 1,700 installations, tank monitors funded by deferring a depot upgrade, and two rural depots kept at C$800,000 a year of forgone saving. Her current focus, formation, a quotation from her chair and a contact panel follow.

Career set out as a ledger of responsibility

The Career page is where the composition earns its name. Each of six appointments sits between ruled lines, dates in a fixed left column and title and employer beside them. A tinted panel beneath gives sector, ownership, scale, employees, geography, reporting line, team and financial scope in four columns, before the narrative. That helps her story because its scale changes sharply: a terminal engineer with no direct reports, a safety engineer with two coordinators, a regional manager of sixty-four people and a COO leading about 760. The panel falls to two columns on a tablet and one on a small phone.

Board readiness recorded without overstatement

The readiness page begins with a register between double rules. On the left, her exposure carries exact labels: nine years presenting to Brannockmere's board and its safety committee, which is not a directorship, and a non-profit seat from which she steps out of supplier decisions. On the right are the committees she would join, twenty-two days a year, one current directorship and her preferred sectors. The analysis follows in one reading column, and the databank line explains why an Indian requirement does not apply to her.

Why Obsidian, IBM Plex Serif and Inter suit an energy operations audience

Obsidian pairs a blue-black ground and slate panels with warm ivory text and a muted gold accent. For an energy operations executive, the dark field suggests a control room or a winter night shift, and the gold marks dates, labels and the closing quotation rather than decorating. The code loads IBM Plex Serif for the heading, names and figures, and Inter for body text, navigation and small factual labels. Plex Serif's engineered character fits a career built on procedures and measurements; Inter keeps dense chronology facts legible. Check a shadowed portrait against the dark ground before publishing.

Other leaders this design serves

The Record suits leaders whose case rests on a long, verifiable sequence of operating responsibility: a utility's head of network operations, a port or mining COO, an operations chief in logistics or hospital estates, or a public-sector operations director. It is less suited to someone whose authority comes mainly from published ideas, because Advantage carries no essays.

Questions about this design

Why does the main heading show a thesis instead of Vivienne Sinclair's name?
Her name already appears in the masthead and identity details, so the largest heading can carry the operating argument her site supports. In your version, use four to ten words drawn from your own thesis that only your record could support.
Can the home page show short appointment summaries as well?
Yes. The composition includes an appointments timeline with expandable scope notes, which appears when short career entries are supplied. Vivienne's demonstration leaves the chronology to the Career page. If you use both, keep the summaries consistent with the detailed record.
What should replace the heating figures in my version?
Measures that belong to your own remit, each with a period and a clear label. Vivienne marks company revenue as largely fuel pass-through, then gives accounts, installations and response times her operations control. A plant COO might use output, availability and recordable injuries.
How much evidence does this Advantage design need?
All seven pages: a home argument with three proof points, a biography, four or five practice areas, three cases with costs and disagreements, a dated chronology, a readiness record and a contact note. The ruled ledger makes thin mandates and outcomes noticeable.
