Protected-Area Visitor-Service Recovery Leader

The mandate

The role holds visitor-service authority across booking channels, concession operations, ranger communication, gate services, accommodation and digital platforms. Conservation, fire, search-and-rescue and statutory judgments remain independent.

The appointment starts within two weeks and runs ten months through fire season, peak tourism and the selection of a permanent executive. The first twenty-one days secure high-risk activities, reconcile sellable inventory and create one closure position. Months two through six rebuild concession, booking, gate, accommodation and remedy controls; the final phase proves readiness through peak load, wildfire and weather scenarios and transfers the operation after successor-led site reviews.

Handover is complete when the permanent leader has chaired six weekly visitor-readiness reviews, all active concessions meet a sampled evidence standard, closure changes reach every sales and on-site channel within approved clocks, and unresolved remedies have accountable dispositions. The successor receives hazard-interface maps, concession cure records, capacity rules, community commitments, visitor and revenue baselines, incident lessons and a ninety-day plan owned by permanent area managers.

The interim may suspend sales or concession activity, reset visitor capacity, reallocate service teams, change booking and remedy workflows and replace temporary providers within approved budgets. Terminating a long-term concession, changing access fees, removing senior executives, closing an area beyond statutory direction, altering community benefit commitments or spending above ZAR40 million needs chief-executive and board approval. Rangers, conservation scientists, fire commanders and rescue leaders retain their authorities.

Conservation policy, wildlife management, land claims, long-term destination marketing, new infrastructure and the independent incident inquiries are outside scope. The interim will not overrule a closure, encourage unsafe self-guided access, mask failed refunds or increase capacity beyond ecological and emergency evidence. Work centres on a truthful visitor promise and governable concession system in the existing network; scientific and statutory determinations remain attributed to qualified owners.

Why this seat is open

Visitor incidents exposed that commercial channels and field safety decisions were operating on different clocks, leading to concession suspensions and an executive departure before peak season. The board cannot defer public protection until a permanent search ends. It needs a leader who understands high-demand visitor services, can enforce stop decisions and can rebuild trust without appropriating conservation or emergency command.

What you will own

• Reconcile booking, capacity, closure, entry, activity, incident, remedy and concession evidence into one visitor-service baseline.
• Decide sellable inventory and activity suspension within delegation against confirmed conservation and safety constraints.
• Establish one closure-change route across booking partners, contact centres, gates, guides, accommodation and public communication.
• Reset concession qualification, daily readiness, audit sampling, cure evidence and suspension thresholds.
• Rebuild visitor remedy and refund workflows around traceable journeys, vulnerability and disrupted itineraries.
• Exercise wildfire, extreme weather, transport loss, system outage and concession-failure scenarios before peak season.
• Induct the permanent executive through six reviews and transfer risks, commitments, contracts and site decisions.

Candidate qualifications

• Has held executive authority across protected-area tourism, major attractions or similarly safety-constrained visitor networks.
• Can evidence recovery where commercial inventory remained open after field hazard or capacity conditions changed.
• Understands booking distribution, visitor flow, concessions, accommodation, guides, incident interfaces and customer remedy.
• Has worked with conservation, emergency and public authorities without diluting their independent decisions.
• Can balance access, community economics and visitor revenue against real ecological and response capacity.
• Has handed a public-facing recovery to permanent leadership through fire, weather or peak-demand cycles.
