My contribution to a board
I would help directors examine whether a product promise remains credible in the setting where customers actually use it. A hosted demonstration can borrow attention from a facilitator, assume an uninterrupted evening or hide a request for help that changes a private choice. My experience gives me concrete questions about those conditions, including an approval error of my own. I would connect them with financial, operational, people and specialist perspectives rather than treat a product preference as the whole enterprise answer. The board should be able to see the observed use situation, the proposed response and the evidence still required before a broader commitment. I would also distinguish a legitimate development decision from a claim that the product has already launched successfully. The contribution is to make the customer task and the unfinished work visible in collective judgement, with detailed design and professional assessments remaining with the owners responsible for carrying them out.
Judgement in practice
01Questioning the recognition assumed by a familiar design team
I approved colour-only faction tokens before thirteen of thirty-two observed adults assigned a piece incorrectly. A ₹35 lakh programme added shape and embossed-symbol work; five of forty different adults still needed assistance later. I would ask what the evidence demonstrates about use and which people remain outside a stronger claim. The differing groups prevent a causal comparison, and neither exercise establishes a diagnosis or safety certification. Directors can examine whether management's assurance includes the actual task without choosing the component design themselves. My earlier approval belongs in that account, because the confidence of a team that knows the product is not sufficient evidence of what a new player can recognise.
02Including the work behind an advertised player count
Seventeen of thirty adult pairs needed help managing neutral actions in a two-player prototype. We funded ₹66 lakh of turn-track and neutral-action-deck development rather than keep relying on a facilitator whose contribution the label did not acknowledge. I would ask whether the proposition includes every material task it expects the advertised group to perform. The case claims no completed launch, universal independent play or improved win rate. A board can examine the changed scope and the assurance needed for the next commitment while product, research, manufacturing and quality owners retain their responsibilities. The useful distinction is between a funded response and evidence that the promise has been fulfilled.
03Keeping a reasonable help request from changing the private task
Nine of twenty-four adult groups reported that asking about a secret-action card exposed the choice they were considering. A ₹53 lakh programme developed a personal plain-language reference. I would ask how assistance affects the experience being promised and whether the response preserves the intended information boundary. The finding does not establish cheating or a participant's inability, and the funded aid is not proof that every ambiguity disappears. Directors can expect a coherent account of the observed problem and next evaluation without prescribing the reference layout. The decision accepted additional product work rather than make a request for clarity conditional on giving up part of the task.
My first year on a board
I would start by completing the preparation still outstanding and understanding the actual board and committee duties with qualified guidance. Induction should connect the receiving company's economics, customer commitments and operating responsibilities before I assume which product questions are most useful. Through agreed channels I would examine selected propositions from the promised experience to the research and specialist assessments supporting it. I would ask the chair whether my contribution helps colleagues evaluate a commitment or becomes an attempt to redesign the product from the boardroom. I would not request protected prototypes or customer observations without an appropriate purpose. A useful first year would broaden my understanding beyond games, strengthen my ability to consider financial and human consequences alongside use evidence and show that I can revise an interpretation when another director brings a context I have missed. Oversight should become clearer without creating another executive approval route around my personal preferences.
Conflicts and their management
Before sensitive access I would disclose executive employment, my 0.7% holding and relevant relationships with founders, the growth investor, design partners, research providers and suppliers. Qualified assessment should consider the particular company and matters likely to arise, including whether exclusions would prevent the contribution the board expects. I would not bring protected product concepts, unpublished research or commercial terms from my employer into another institution's discussion. Employer agreement must cover capacity as well as formal permission. Twenty-one provisional days need to be tested against preparation, meetings, travel and unusual demands, including periods when my current development responsibilities require concentrated attention. Relationships and practical availability can change after appointment and would need continuing review. If recurring restrictions or competing work make useful participation unrealistic, a title does not solve that problem; the arrangement should be reconsidered before confidential duties exceed what I can responsibly fulfil.
My independence statement
Employment, my 0.7% employee holding and relationships with founders, the investor, design partners and suppliers need qualified review. Absence of a current statutory seat does not establish independence for another company.

The seat I am pursuing
I would explore one first non-executive role in a consumer or related enterprise where examining the actual user task would complement the board's existing expertise. A product, customer, innovation or risk committee could be relevant only after its remit and my eligibility are assessed. I do not claim committee-chair readiness from executive presentations or the CPO title. Registration and proficiency preparation remain unstarted, with actual appointment conditions and company-specific learning still to address. Twenty-one provisional days would include induction, reading, travel and exceptional work alongside current duties. I would value a chair who expects me to contribute beyond design detail and listen carefully when another perspective changes the consequence of a product decision. The appointment should use my experience to improve oversight while leaving detailed development and manufacturing, quality and safety assessments with the people authorised to perform them.
