The boardroom
A customer promise should survive the setting in which it will be used
A product promise should be examined in the setting where the customer must fulfil their part of it. A hosted demonstration may supply attention, interpretation and uninterrupted time that the home experience does not contain. My contribution to a board would be to ask what the proposition assumes about that setting and what evidence supports it. The question belongs beside commercial, financial, people and specialist perspectives. It should make an enterprise commitment clearer without turning directors into a second design team.
My 2020 token approval shows why the product leader must also be open to that scrutiny. I accepted colour-only faction pieces because their palette looked clear to us. Thirteen of thirty-two observed adults assigned a token incorrectly. We funded ₹35 lakh of shape and embossed-symbol development; five of forty different adults still needed assistance later. The counts do not establish a causal improvement, diagnosis or universal accessibility. They support an account of an owned approval, a changed brief and unresolved use that remains relevant.
The two-player case examined a different assumption. Seventeen of thirty adult pairs needed help managing neutral actions in a prototype whose visible competitive roles occupied two seats. A ₹66 lakh development programme introduced a turn-track and neutral-action-deck direction. The board-level question is whether the advertised arrangement includes the work it actually requires. Funding that response did not establish a completed launch, and detailed design, manufacturing and quality reviews remained with the responsible owners.
Campaign resumability connected product use with the household around it. Twenty-nine of forty-eight groups wanted to pause across weeks, while nineteen preferred one evening. A ₹74 lakh programme developed reversible physical saving rather than assume the board could remain untouched. Directors could examine the observed situation, cost and next assurance without deciding the envelope layout. A pause preference is not a retention figure, and a funded record mechanism still needs evidence from the session in which the group returns.
Optional timing and private assistance show why a product choice can be more than a feature count. Twenty of thirty-six groups wanted an untimed mode while sixteen preferred a timer, leading to ₹42 lakh of two-mode development. Nine of twenty-four groups described a help request that exposed a secret action, leading to a ₹53 lakh personal-reference programme. Neither study supports population shares, a medical interpretation or a claim that every later interaction works. The governance account should retain the limits while explaining why development was justified.
I would be careful to distinguish product recommendation from professional assurance. A clearer component or observed preference does not certify manufacturing quality or safety. Those owners have separate responsibilities, as do finance, legal and retail operations. A director can ask whether the relevant work has been identified, funded and assessed without assuming that a persuasive product narrative has absorbed it. My role would be to make the user task intelligible within that wider account, not to claim authority over every condition required for release.
My own preparation is unfinished. Databank registration and proficiency preparation have not begun, and no exemption is claimed. A first appointment would require qualified review of eligibility, the actual committee remit and company-specific learning. Employment, my 0.7% holding and relationships with founders, the investor and product partners need disclosure before confidential access. Twenty-one provisional days require employer agreement and capacity for induction, reading, travel and unexpected demands as well as scheduled meetings.
I would ask the chair whether my questions help the board understand a commitment or become a way of imposing my design preferences on management. I would listen when operational or financial expertise changes the significance of a research finding. The contribution I seek is a clearer connection between the promise and the work its user must do. Oversight becomes useful when the enterprise can see that connection, the evidence still missing and the responsibility of the people who will decide whether the product is ready.
On governance
The demonstration table has advantages that a home table does not: a confident host, a known rule and an evening arranged around the product. I ask what the game itself must explain or preserve when those advantages disappear. The work includes recognising a piece, running the neutral turn, putting a campaign away and asking a question without revealing a private choice.
