Temqozri Wagon Services

Sector

Ownership
Family ownership vehicle 60%, patient industrial investor 40%; no personal equity
Company scale
₹182 crore FY2026: ₹112 crore workshop and ₹70 crore mobile services
Employees

Geography

Reporting to
CEO Arun Qevsarti; financial presentations to the company board
Team
Twenty-four finance colleagues through four leads
Financial scope
₹4.8 crore annual finance-function expense; enterprise financial oversight distinct from departmental authority

Mandate

Make the financial boundaries of contract scope, custody, security cash and service activity clear in enterprise decisions.

Outcomes

  • Separated ₹9.6 crore customer-owned and ₹12.8 crore company-owned replacement-value categories in a custody review.
  • Presented ₹6.1 crore combined security-margin and working-resource commitment for the selected smaller programme.
  • Retained ₹1.45 crore remedial-work cost separately from nineteen new chargeable jobs.
  • Reconciled ₹7.8 crore internal services out of an apparent combined external-revenue total.

Decisions in context

My CFO role connects the finance account with decisions made by commercial, workshop and mobile-service leaders. I report to Arun and lead twenty-four colleagues through four leads, including Meera as financial controller. The ₹4.8 crore expense covers the finance function; enterprise oversight does not mean I personally authorise every operating commitment. Recent work has required different boundaries: customer ownership within a custody list, bank cash margin beside working resources, remedial work beside new assignments and internal activity beside external revenue. I want the relevant specialists involved before a convenient total becomes the basis of a board decision. The business retains its regional service character and does not operate a railway or certify equipment through the finance function. This role has strengthened my ability to explain a financial proposition without erasing the operating responsibility or uncertainty behind it.

Reason for the move

Current finance leadership role; exploring a first outside statutory board contribution.

Geography

Chief executive officer
Team
Seventeen finance colleagues
Financial scope
₹2.7 crore annual finance-function expense

Mandate

Lead finance and improve the commercial assumptions supporting workshop resource decisions.

Outcomes

  • Led seventeen colleagues within the stated ₹2.7 crore functional expense.
  • Corrected a 23% combined margin presentation to distinguish authorised and proposed scope.
  • Showed approximately 12.2% contribution on the ₹8.2 crore authorised base before additional resource commitment.

Decisions in context

This appointment gave me responsibility for the finance team and a more direct role in management proposals. The job title did not make me a statutory director. I worked under the CEO and presented financial matters to the board when required. The defining error was my support for a margin account that combined authorised work with a variation still being negotiated. The combined arithmetic was sound, but its commercial premise was not clear enough. When the CEO challenged the resource basis, I separated the scenarios and accepted my role in the original presentation. Management deferred the additional commitment while the options were reviewed. I learned that finance cannot rely on correct calculations alone when the boundary of agreement is the fact that changes the decision. That lesson informed the broader CFO remit I later accepted.

Reason for the move

Appointed CFO as enterprise finance responsibility expanded.

RECORD 03Jan 2009 — Mar 2014

Commercial finance manager

Temqozri Wagon Services

Sector
Regional wagon-refurbishment and mobile repair contracting
Ownership
Fictional privately held family business
Company scale

Employees

Geography
Bilaspur workshop base and regional field work

Finance director
Team
Eight finance colleagues
Financial scope
₹94 lakh annual team expense

Mandate

Connect workshop and contract information to financial comparisons used by operating managers.

Outcomes

  • Managed eight colleagues within ₹94 lakh annual expense.
  • Brought proposed commercial scope and related cost assumptions into the same review.
  • Distinguished physical custody records from ownership claims in management discussions.

Decisions in context

Joining Temqozri brought me closer to the physical work behind a commercial account. Workshop teams could show me the component, the labour and the return visit, but each still needed a clear financial purpose before entering a management comparison. I worked with contract managers and engineers while reporting to the finance director. My team expense and people responsibility were defined; I did not have technical certification authority or control over the entire enterprise budget. The role taught me to ask how scope had been agreed and why a cost existed before assigning it a commercial meaning. I also saw how a useful operational measure could become misleading when copied into another report. Those experiences prepared me to lead finance with a stronger understanding of the practical service work rather than treat it only as a set of accounting categories.

Reason for the move

Promoted to lead the finance function.

Management accountant

Geography
Lucknow base with regional business assignments
Reporting to
Finance manager
Team
Four colleagues
Financial scope
₹32 lakh annual team expense

Mandate

Prepare understandable management comparisons with explicit assumptions and boundaries.

Outcomes

  • Led four colleagues within ₹32 lakh annual expense.
  • Separated changes in reporting basis from changes in the underlying commercial activity.
  • Explained unresolved assumptions to the responsible manager before a comparison was finalised.

Decisions in context

The management-accounting role required me to explain figures rather than simply prepare them. I led four colleagues and worked under the finance manager in a business with fifty-one employees at the stated scale. We supported comparisons used by managers who did not share the accounting team's background. I learned to preserve the basis of a figure when it moved between reports and to explain why an apparent improvement might arise from a changed definition. This did not give me authority to determine every professional treatment or certify a client's accounts. It made me more disciplined about the questions that belonged with the responsible adviser. I wanted to understand the operating choices behind the numbers more directly, which led to the move into Temqozri's workshop-service environment rather than remain solely in reporting support.

Reason for the move

Moved into an operating company's commercial finance function.

Geography

Team
Individual contributor; no direct reports
Financial scope
No delegated expenditure authority

Mandate

Prepare accurate schedules and identify questions that required a responsible manager's decision.

Outcomes

  • Joined after completing the May 1994 commerce degree.
  • Supported commercial schedules in a twenty-six-person firm.
  • Escalated differences between source records and the purpose of a requested comparison.

Decisions in context

My first role began in July 1994, shortly after the commerce degree. I prepared schedules, checked supporting records and worked under an accounts supervisor without spending authority or direct reports. The work gave me an early appreciation of how much meaning depends on the label and purpose of a number. I could check an addition and still need to ask whether the underlying items belonged in the same comparison. I learned to carry those questions to the person responsible rather than fill a gap with an assumption simply to finish the task. The role was analytical support, not a statutory audit or a claim to a professional charter. That distinction remains important in my later record: expertise grows through responsibility, but a clear account should not enlarge the authority of an earlier position after the fact.

Reason for the move

Promoted to management accountant with people and expense responsibility.

What I am looking for next

I am interested in a finance-leadership or advisory remit where regional engineering-service economics need to be made clearer to management and owners. A business combining workshops, field teams and customer-owned equipment would be relevant, provided I first understand its actual contracts and technical responsibilities. I would want a defined relationship with the CEO, access to the relevant operating information and a finance team able to challenge its own assumptions. My experience is most useful where the enterprise needs to distinguish commercial opportunity from authorised scope and activity from financial consequence. I am also exploring an initial statutory board contribution alongside my current CFO role. The fictional databank assessment is passed, but that is not an appointment or a company-specific independence finding. Twenty-two days is a provisional annual capacity estimate, including preparation and urgent periods. Before proceeding, I would discuss the charter, relationships, expectations and actual availability rather than assume that a functional title establishes fit for every finance or governance responsibility.
