Mandate
Make the responsibility and evidence behind management appointments, performance decisions and career choices explicit.
Outcomes
- Reworked the evidence used in twenty-four store-manager appointments
- Withdrew the automatic customer-feedback input after reviewing eighty-three contested ratings
- Established six funded advanced-store pilot roles with defined responsibilities
Decisions in context
The group appointment required me to examine how local management decisions were shaped by central policy, investment and succession expectations. I worked with the executive team on the store-manager selection review, retaining commercial evidence while asking what the candidate had done for other people. The customer-feedback pilot tested my own judgement: I had supported a measure whose calculation looked more consistent than the decisions it produced. We changed the process and corrected ratings where the evidence justified it. The advanced-store pilot began with a different kind of listening, after experienced managers declined district consideration. My responsibility is to connect these choices with the enterprise account, including cost and uncertainty. I do not run trading from the people function. I want the company’s managers to be able to explain the responsibility they assign and the basis on which they assess it.
Reason for the move
Current appointment; open to another defined retail people mandate and a first external board contribution.
