Learning how a central process reaches a working colleague

Chief Human Resources Officer

Nevzheqi Travel Stores

Sector
Luggage, bags and travel-accessory retail
Ownership
Vaqzhemi Travel Holdings 68%; Indian promoters 32%; no personal holding
Company scale
FY March 2026: ₹542 crore revenue and ₹37 crore operating profit
Employees
1,650 employees across forty-eight shops
Geography
Jammu headquarters and Indian retail network
Reporting to
CEO Arun Zhevqenmi
Team
Forty-two people colleagues through five heads
Financial scope
₹7.3 crore annual function expense; ₹96 crore enterprise employee cost is a separate measure

Mandate

Make people-policy commitments workable through individual arrangements, reward explanation, responsible voice reporting and paid-work communication access

Outcomes

  • Supported thirty-two care-break returns with twenty-one usual and eleven phased-hour arrangements
  • Presented an award redesign with explicit payment tradeoffs and a ₹60 lakh maximum envelope
  • Kept thirty-one concern records and nineteen closure statuses separate from claims of trust or satisfaction
  • Funded ₹46 lakh for communication routes after sixty-four of 240 reviewed colleagues lacked reliable paid-shift app access

Decisions in context

I became CHRO in January 2022 and now lead forty-two people colleagues through five heads within ₹7.3 crore annual function expense. The retailer's 1,650 employees and ₹96 crore employee cost describe enterprise scale, not a discretionary people budget. I report to CEO Arun Zhevqenmi, while COO Sonal Deqvezi retains store operations. The cases from this period test whether a policy's practical design supports its promise: individual care-break returns, an award curve with disclosed tradeoffs, a concern count that cannot prove trust and communication access during paid shifts. I have no shares or statutory appointment. Preparing for an outside role means translating these experiences into questions for collective oversight while learning beyond my function. It does not mean carrying operating authority into another company's people team or treating registration as completed appointment readiness.

Reason for the move

Continuing as CHRO while preparing for a first outside non-executive contribution

Concurrent appointment

No statutory directorship accompanies the CHRO appointment.

Team
Twenty-eight people colleagues through four leads
Financial scope
₹4.9 crore annual function expense

Mandate

Lead enterprise people-process delivery and examine the practical assurances given to employees and managers

Outcomes

  • Owned the premature endorsement of the 2021 survey anonymity promise
  • Held manager-report release after fourteen one-person cells emerged from combined filters
  • Supported ₹24 lakh for report redesign, permissions and explanation without claiming a published identity or universal anonymity

Decisions in context

Enterprise people operations brought twenty-eight colleagues, four leads and ₹4.9 crore annual function expense under the CHRO. At appointment the company employed 1,200 people and recorded ₹381 crore revenue for FY ending March 2017. My director title was a management position, without a statutory seat. In 2021 I supported an anonymity promise for a survey before sufficiently examining how the manager report could be read. Store, role and tenure filters created fourteen one-person cells despite the absence of names. We held release and funded a ₹24 lakh correction. No published respondent identity is claimed, but I retained responsibility for endorsing the assurance too soon. The experience changed how I approached enterprise people work: a central design needed examination from the recipient's perspective before its promise could be treated as credible.

Reason for the move

Appointed CHRO with enterprise people responsibility from January 2022

Concurrent appointment

Director of people operations was a management title, not a statutory directorship.

HR director
Team
Twelve people colleagues, including two leads
Financial scope
₹2.1 crore annual function expense

Mandate

Connect regional people-policy delivery with the practical conditions of different shops

Outcomes

  • Examined whether common procedures assumed access or capacity that some shops lacked
  • Worked with operating managers while retaining the HR director's decision authority
  • Developed regional judgement about the explanation and support required to apply a common principle

Decisions in context

I joined Nevzheqi in September 2009, when the retailer employed 700 people and recorded ₹214 crore revenue for FY ending March 2010. Twelve people colleagues, including two leads, worked within ₹2.1 crore annual function expense under the HR director. The shop network made variation in practical conditions more visible to me. A process designed for one location could assume access, manager capacity or opportunity that another did not share. I wanted a common principle to remain recognisable without pretending that every condition of use was identical. The role developed my ability to discuss those differences with operating colleagues rather than treat a local difficulty as automatic resistance to policy. It also taught me to preserve the distinction between regional implementation responsibility and decisions retained by the HR director and enterprise leadership.

Reason for the move

Promoted to lead people operations across the enterprise

People Manager

Geography

Head of people
Team
Seven people colleagues
Financial scope
₹78 lakh annual people-function expense

Mandate

Prepare managers to apply people processes and keep employee explanations aligned with agreed arrangements

Outcomes

  • Brought manager preparation into the delivery of people processes
  • Distinguished common policy wording from individual understanding and agreement
  • Managed the people team within a defined expense remit under the function head

Decisions in context

The promotion in July 2002 added seven colleagues and ₹78 lakh annual function expense to my responsibilities. Delqurmi had grown to 360 employees, with ₹91 crore revenue for FY ending March 2003. I reported to the people head and began to consider the manager's ability to carry out a process alongside the process itself. A common document could support consistency, but it could not replace an accurate conversation about the actual arrangement. I learned to distinguish the authority of the policy from the discretion of the person explaining it. The work also required care about what private circumstances belonged in a discussion and what could be omitted. Regional responsibility at another retailer offered a way to develop that judgement across more varied locations while retaining the disciplines learned in a smaller people team.

Reason for the move

Joined a luggage retailer to take regional people responsibility across a larger operating setting

Employees

Geography

Team
One of four people colleagues; no direct reports
Financial scope
No delegated spending authority

Mandate

Support employee administration and make routine process explanations usable for shop colleagues

Outcomes

  • Learned to distinguish a completed central record from an explanation understood at the shop
  • Supported people administration without claiming authority over employment decisions
  • Developed attention to the personal details needed for a task and those that should remain private

Decisions in context

I entered retail people work in July 1996 after completing my BBA that May. Delqurmi employed 120 people and recorded ₹21 crore revenue for FY ending March 1997. Working among four people colleagues, I had no direct reports or spending authority. The position gave me a close view of how employees encountered processes that looked straightforward from the central office. An explanation could be complete in the record yet unclear to the person expected to act on it. I learned to ask what the colleague needed to understand and which personal details were actually necessary for the task. Those habits developed through support work under a manager, not through authority to make every employment decision. They became a foundation for later responsibility for people policies and the conditions through which they were used.

Reason for the move

Promoted to people manager with responsibility for a team and function expense

What I am looking for next

I want to contribute to a board that asks how its promises to people are supported in practice. My experience can help examine the conditions behind an assurance, the choices inside a reward formula and the limits of a workforce measure. I would need to learn the receiving enterprise's economics, sector and responsibilities beyond people leadership. Fictional IICA registration was completed in July 2026, but proficiency assessment remains unfinished and no exemption is claimed. I have no statutory seat or personal holding in Nevzheqi. Twenty provisional days would need to cover induction, reading, travel and exceptional demands alongside executive work, with employer agreement. I would explore one first outside role where the chair expects constructive questions and collective judgement, rather than a second management CHRO. The next chapter should test whether I can contribute a useful perspective while respecting specialist responsibilities and admitting where my retail experience does not yet provide an adequate basis for a conclusion.
