The boardroom

Give the board a candid account of what the people evidence supports

A board should be able to ask what supports an assurance made about people without becoming the operator of the people process. My experience would contribute questions about the conditions behind a promise, the choices inside a reward design and the meaning of a workforce measure. I would bring those questions into collective enterprise judgement, alongside financial, commercial and operating perspectives. An experienced CHRO still needs to learn the receiving institution and the responsibilities of an outside appointment.

The survey report I supported in 2021 is the clearest reason I take the basis of an assurance seriously. Names were absent, but store, role and tenure filters produced fourteen one-person cells. We held manager release and allocated ₹24 lakh to redesign, permissions and explanation. No published identity or legal breach is asserted in this fictional case. The governance lesson is not a universal reporting rule; it is that my confidence in a people promise had outrun the examination required to support it.

Directors can ask how management tested that assurance and who provided the relevant specialist assessment. They need not request employee responses or reconstruct the report themselves. Oversight should preserve appropriate boundaries around protected material while examining whether the promise is credible. A funded correction also needs a clear account of its stage and limits. Spending ₹24 lakh does not itself establish anonymity or restore trust, just as removing a name field did not settle the original question.

Reward design requires a similar willingness to show an inconvenient consequence. Our proposed gradual award formula paid ₹10,000 at exactly 100% of sales plan, below the old ₹12,000. It reduced a sharp payment cliff, but did not improve every participant's result. The board approved a maximum ₹60 lakh envelope for three hundred eligible adults, separate from actual payout or business outcomes. I would expect a proposal to retain those distinctions and the qualified reward and employment review required for a real decision.

People evidence also needs interpretation proportionate to what it measures. Thirty-one concern records after a channel launch, compared with twelve previously, did not prove a change in trust. Nineteen closures and twelve pending matters described status, not satisfaction or a conclusion about each case. Directors can ask which next enquiry management intends to make and whether appropriate case owners have the resources they need. They should not need identifiable employee detail to understand why a reassuring culture conclusion would exceed the available evidence.

Communication access adds an operating dimension. Sixty-four of 240 reviewed colleagues lacked reliable paid-shift access to the work app. A ₹46 lakh programme of terminals and paid briefings addressed that gap without claiming universal receipt or comprehension. The question for governance is whether management understands the conditions required for its commitment and can report progress accurately. The board should not prescribe every shop arrangement, but it can challenge an account that treats central publication as completed communication to every employee.

My exposure comes from people and reward proposals presented through the CEO, rather than a statutory appointment. I have no personal shareholding. Fictional registration in July 2026 is complete, while proficiency assessment remains unfinished and no exemption is claimed. Any actual role would need qualified eligibility and relationship review, company-specific induction and learning beyond my function. A nomination and remuneration, people or risk committee could be relevant only after its responsibilities and my suitability were understood; I do not claim chair readiness from my executive title.

I would disclose employment and relevant relationships with the overseas parent, Indian promoters, advisers, suppliers and colleagues before confidential access. Twenty provisional days require employer agreement and allowance for preparation, travel and exceptional demands. If exclusions prevent meaningful participation, accepting the role would not solve the conflict. I want an outside contribution to rest on useful questions, careful preparation and openness to challenge. That includes recognising when an apparently familiar people problem has a different meaning in an enterprise whose economics, workforce or obligations I am still learning.

On governance

A carefully written policy can still ask a colleague to accept a promise the organisation has not made workable. I want the reporting design, reward calculation, manager preparation and means of access to be examined alongside the words. My own experience of endorsing an anonymity promise too early keeps that question personal.
