Referral communication and household understanding6 min read
Understand the household before counting the enquiry
A lender's promise is interpreted before an application reaches its branch. The distinction between an introduction and an approval must survive that first encounter.
An educational event can be useful even when many participants do not ask for an application conversation. Its purpose and evaluation should allow that outcome.
I lead housing-finance marketing by studying the route a household takes to the lender and the assumptions it carries at each handover.
I am CMO of Avirneli Home Finance in Bhubaneswar. We serve households through 58 branches in four eastern and central Indian states, alongside referral partners whose role must be clearly identified. I lead 37 marketing and research colleagues through four managers, with a ₹24 crore annual budget. Our March 2026 housing-loan portfolio was ₹3,260 crore. Credit decisions, pricing and property review remain outside marketing; my team is accountable for how people encounter and understand the route into the company.
I began as an audio producer, listening to people explain everyday decisions in their own words. Regional marketing for household products taught me how a distributor changes the meaning of a brand promise. I moved into housing finance in 2012, first supporting branches and later leading customer research. Becoming CMO in 2023 brought those experiences together: I could connect what households told us with the way we allocated money, briefed partners and measured acquisition.
The cases here concern referral signage, duplicate enquiries, an information-session format that respected the choice not to apply and a customer story withdrawn after its permissions were examined. They are about the quality of a commercial relationship before and after an application enters the system. Each decision retained a cost or limitation. I do not treat a larger enquiry count as proof of new demand or a customer's willingness to speak as permission to use every detail of their life.
A referral point must not look like a branch
In an initial comprehension exercise, 39 of sixty participants believed a partner location could approve a loan. After revised signage and a clearer explanation of the partner's role, seven of sixty participants in a separate follow-up group held that belief. We changed the material across 46 partner points while retaining the limits of the small research exercise.
Enquiries need people behind the count
A review of 8,600 campaign enquiry entries found 2,666 repeat entries, leaving 5,934 distinct enquiries under the agreed matching method. We revised channel reporting and reallocated ₹42 lakh of the next quarter's budget. The lower count was an honest basis for planning, not a decline in underlying interest caused by the review.
An information session is not an application queue
Across twelve household-finance sessions, 186 attendees chose an information-only route and 74 separately requested contact about an application. We kept the two permissions distinct and removed the expectation that every attendee should become a sales lead, accepting a smaller prospect list from the programme.
Current focus
I am bringing branch research, referral-point comprehension and acquisition reporting into one planning conversation. The work asks which households are genuinely new to the company, what they understand about the next step and whether the channel can support that step without improvising a promise.
Conversations I welcome
I am open to a first non-executive role in a regional consumer or service business where distribution relationships shape the customer experience. I have provisionally allocated sixteen days annually, subject to employer consent, travel and the proposed committee calendar. I would contribute customer-research judgement without claiming credit or legal expertise.

Since Shalini became CMO in 2023, I have seen her make the cost of a recommendation explicit. When the enquiry count fell after review, she explained why the smaller number was more useful to our spending decision instead of defending the original report.
