Chief Operating Officer / India
Explain the conditions before enlarging the promise
An industrial utility service is accountable for the conditions its customer receives, and for explaining the limits of an operating result before calling it an improvement.
01
Explain the conditions behind an energy comparison
I ask whether two consumption totals describe sufficiently comparable work before presenting their difference as an operating improvement. Customer production, demand and the relevant service conditions can change, and qualified specialists need to establish the appropriate measurement account. The raw totals should remain visible even when the initial interpretation is withdrawn. I do not ask for a convenient adjustment whose purpose is to preserve a preferred result. My role is to make the business decision wait for an explanation it can support, including where I encouraged the earlier claim. A more careful comparison may leave uncertainty rather than produce a new headline immediately. It should also keep energy quantities separate from cash or environmental conclusions, each of which requires its own scope and evidence. The outcome is a better management account, not a substitute for an engineering assessment.
02
Investigate the service across the point where responsibility changes
A contractual interface helps define responsibilities, but it should not become a reason to stop understanding a customer's problem. I coordinate the operating, customer and technical owners so that observations on both sides can enter the review through appropriate authority. A supplier-side finding, a client-side finding and an unresolved case are different outcomes. Uncertainty should not automatically be allocated to the party with the weaker negotiating position. Technical specialists retain the method and conclusion, while commercial and legal colleagues interpret the actual commitments. My contribution is to make the unresolved work and its cost visible enough to support a next step. Cooperation does not mean accepting every allegation or entering a customer's installation without permission. It means refusing to use an administrative boundary as proof that a physical service question has already been answered.
03
Test whether recoverable heat has a supported use
The presence of a heat source does not by itself establish a useful investment. I ask who can use the recovered energy, during which periods and under what technical and commercial conditions. Qualified engineers assess the actual system, while the customer and commercial owners establish the proposed use. A seasonal requirement should not quietly become a full-year revenue or benefit assumption. I retain the feasibility cost when a larger proposal is declined, and I distinguish a bounded pilot from a completed business case. The smaller choice may deliver less than the original ambition and still be the supported next step. I would not describe the unapproved capital as cash saved or assume that every unit of theoretically recoverable heat displaces another energy source. The investment account must connect the resource to an actual, assessed demand.
04
Ask what a response test really demonstrated
I separate successful contact from attendance, technical action and resolution. A message acknowledged by the duty function can be useful evidence that one part of the response process worked, but it cannot establish the later stages by implication. Tests need a clear purpose and a record of unresolved failures, with qualified operating and safety owners retaining the arrangements for real events. I examine whether the process depends on a personal contact who may be unavailable or whether responsibility is supported by the agreed organisation. The cost of correcting that weakness belongs in the service account. A later set of successful acknowledgements should not be turned into a claim that every future response will work or that a customer incident has been prevented. The practical value is knowing more precisely which part of the promise has been tested and which still requires evidence.
A leadership conviction
A plant result becomes useful when the account explains what changed for the customer, what the operator actually controlled and which conclusion the evidence still cannot support.
