The Board is appointing a steward of institutional capability
The company combines process engineering, manufacturing, resource stewardship, supply networks and customer relationships that mature over long cycles. The NRC Chair must ensure that leadership succession and reward preserve capability across cycles rather than optimise only the current order book. The role requires respect for technical depth, paired with the willingness to challenge where expertise has become concentrated, unexamined or resistant to renewal.
Succession architecture
CEO succession will be considered under planned transition, abrupt absence and strategic change. The committee will also cover leaders of major businesses, projects, engineering, manufacturing, finance, digital, service, risk and sustainability. Readiness will be tested through enterprise assignments, capital judgement, customer consequence and leadership of difficult cross-functional decisions.
The NRC should identify roles where qualification, relationships or tacit engineering knowledge require long overlap. A standard notice period is not a succession plan where proficiency takes years. The Board needs clear build, recruit, partner or retain decisions for such roles.
Organisation design
As the portfolio changes, decision rights between business, project, technology and functional leadership must remain explicit. The Chair will ask where matrix coordination adds value and where it obscures accountability. Growth initiatives should state the management capacity they consume and what existing priorities will receive less attention.
Technical career paths and leadership paths should allow expertise to scale without forcing every specialist into people management. The committee will review internal mobility, cross-business development, diversity and whether site or project leaders can escalate adverse information without career penalty.
Remuneration and consequences
Order intake and revenue are incomplete measures. Executive reward should incorporate cash, project outcome, safety, quality, warranty, resource efficiency, leadership development and control conduct. Long-term incentives should not reward capital deployment before utilisation and economic benefit are demonstrated.
Deferral and malus will be tested against late project loss, quality failure, safety consequence and compliance breach. The Board should know how later evidence changes an earlier performance assessment.
Board renewal
The Chair will maintain a forward skills matrix that reflects industrial technology, international markets, capital allocation, sustainability, cyber-physical risk and stakeholder trust. Annual evaluation should produce specific changes in agenda, composition, committee succession or education.
First-year assignment
The new Chair will map the leadership and technical capabilities required by the three largest strategic bets over five years, then compare the timetable with actual successor and talent pipelines. Where the gap is structural, the Board must revise investment sequencing or capability strategy.
Who should apply
Candidates may be former industrial CEOs, business presidents, CHROs with deep manufacturing exposure, engineering leaders with enterprise range or experienced NRC chairs. Evidence of succession, organisation design and long-cycle reward judgement is essential. Appointment requires independence, DIN, databank compliance and availability for site, Board and succession work.
