The freight market inside the revenue number
I examine how purchased transport rates can move through a forwarder's revenue and costs, making the headline difficult to interpret. A fictional annual comparison shows lower revenue with higher gross profit, followed by questions about volume, mix and service responsibility. The session asks participants to keep absolute contribution, its percentage and the overhead still to be paid in their proper places. I also explain why the scope of a business comparison must remain separate from the whole company's result. The discussion does not prescribe a universal gross or net accounting treatment for forwarders; the underlying contract and applicable policies require their own assessment. My aim is to help commercial and financial colleagues bring directors an account they can question, rather than a growth or decline label that obscures the purchased service. Participants should leave with a clearer way to explain a market movement without claiming that every favourable change came from management's own action.
