An insurer's reputation is shaped by the attention it chooses not to buy.
The advertising calendar offers an insurer many reasons to keep speaking. Space has been bought, a distributor expects support or a campaign is approaching its launch date. None of those commitments tells us whether the message belongs in the situation customers are experiencing. I lead marketing by making that question part of the decision before the institution's voice is already in public.
My perspective comes from both sides of the agency relationship. I began in account work in July 1996 and joined Hengsuyuan Insurance six years later, moving through regional marketing, intermediary communication and group brand leadership. Since July 2020 I have been CMO, reporting to Yanru Xun. I lead sixty-two employees through five direct reports, with twenty-eight agency personnel counted separately and CNY118 million of 2026 marketing authority.
Hengsuyuan is a fictional Hangzhou-based property-and-casualty insurer. Its CNY8.4 billion of 2025 gross written premium, 2,600 employees and thirty-six service centres establish company scale. My authority concerns communication and marketing resources. It does not include claims decisions, underwriting, pricing, reserves or distribution commissions. That distinction matters most when a public message attracts questions that only the responsible operating specialists can answer.
A cancelled promotion with its cost left in the account
During a fictional regional flood in July 2024, I stopped a CNY3.2 million promotional schedule and accepted CNY460,000 of unrecoverable placement cost. We redirected CNY1.1 million towards service communication over fourteen days. The result was a different use of our voice, not a claim that marketing accelerated claim settlement or reduced the loss suffered by customers.
Partner support with a smaller stage and clearer responsibility
I replaced a proposed eight-event intermediary programme costing CNY6.4 million with four working forums budgeted at CNY3.8 million. Sixty of seventy-two invited broker firms participated. The work concerned who could approve, update and withdraw shared promotional material. Attendance did not establish sales quality or regulatory compliance, and twelve firms' absence remained an unresolved relationship question.
A service campaign whose footprint followed preparation
A CNY4.6 million campaign was planned around eleven service centres. Operational review supported launching at seven, while four needed further preparation for the contact demand the message could create. I accepted a smaller media footprint and kept CNY1.3 million of the original proposal uncommitted. The revised launch did not turn preparation checks into a promise about every customer encounter.
Current focus
I am making the decision to pause, narrow or revise communication easier to take before sunk expenditure dominates the discussion. That means preparing alternatives with agency and operating colleagues, identifying the owner of a changing public statement and recording the cost of the choice honestly. I want marketing managers to explain when less exposure is the more responsible commercial recommendation.
Conversations I welcome
I am available for selected conversations about insurer reputation, intermediary communication and the relationship between public messages and operating capacity. I hold one non-executive directorship and would assess any additional commitment alongside my executive work and existing board calendar. A proposed contribution should have a defined purpose, appropriate consent and relationships that can be handled credibly.
