Ask what the evidence permits the enterprise to promise

My contribution to a board

I could help a board examine the relationship between evidence and the commercial promises built on it. A data product may look reliable while a selection rule removes test history, a validation split answers the wrong question or an archive is offered for a purpose its permissions do not support. Those are material issues for the enterprise's resources, responsibilities and reputation. The board should understand how management identifies and controls them without attempting to conduct every laboratory or analytical decision itself.

My own highest-result mistake is relevant because it shows the limits of my judgement as well as the experience I offer. I approved a convenient summary before asking whether it had authority to choose the reported value. The correction required expense and a less uniform product. I would bring that account into an oversight discussion rather than present myself as someone who has always resisted pressure for simplicity. The contribution is an ability to recognise consequential evidence choices and ask who owns them, not a claim that a data specialist can certify every technical conclusion.

Judgement in practice

01

A validation result that did not match the product's proposed use

The predictive proposal concerned a new batch, while thirty of forty batches initially supplied specimens to both development and assessment. I would ask whether the evidence management presents resembles the commercial decision it intends to support. The revised twenty-six versus fourteen batch allocation and ₹45 lakh programme retained uncertainty rather than promise a better score. Directors should understand what had to be reassessed, what claim was deferred and who approves the eventual use. They need not choose every modelling technique to challenge a mismatch between evaluation and commitment.

02

An archive whose inclusion rights and selection limits differed

Twenty-nine of forty-eight projects had a documented basis for the proposed reuse; nineteen remained unresolved. I would ask directors to distinguish permission, analytical relevance and expected commercial value. A cleared subset still did not represent an entire market, and the ₹34 lakh review with ₹9 lakh annual stewardship remained a cost. The board's challenge should concern material assumptions and accountability for the release, leaving individual contract and technical decisions with their qualified owners. A larger stored collection is not sufficient evidence that a broader saleable product already exists.

My first year on a board

I would use induction to understand how the enterprise earns revenue from observations, reports and analytical products. Which conclusions are professionally authorised, which are exploratory and which become contractual promises? I would want to understand the financial account and the relationships surrounding those activities before assuming that my current practice is a useful model for another business. Familiar data vocabulary can conceal a very different allocation of responsibility, especially when the new company serves different clients or carries different obligations.

With the chair's agreement, I would follow a small number of material decisions from their initial evidence to the commitments eventually made. The purpose would be to learn how the board challenges assumptions and how management explains changes, not to create a parallel laboratory review. I would seek feedback on whether my questions help the whole board assess the business or pull the discussion into specialist execution. The first year should establish a disciplined way to contribute, including where another director's or adviser's expertise is more relevant than mine.

Conflicts and their management

My current relationships include laboratory clients, instrument and software suppliers, advisers, investors and organisations whose data the practice holds. A proposed board role could intersect with those relationships even if its sector label differs. I would disclose the relevant connections and my 0.03% interest for appropriate assessment. Some circumstances could require limits on participation; others might make the appointment unsuitable. I would not assume that disclosure cures every conflict or that a small personal holding makes the examination unnecessary.

The time position also needs a real test. Twenty-one days is a provisional annual estimate, with induction, preparation, travel and exceptional demands considered alongside the continuing CDO role. Employer consent and the ability to respond during a difficult period matter as much as scheduled meetings. I would prefer a narrower opportunity that fits the preparation and capacity available to a prestigious appointment whose demands I cannot meet. The website should make that limitation visible before a nomination conversation creates expectations beyond the experience and time actually offered.

My independence statement

I am employed by Pevqazri and hold 0.03% through its employee allocation; I do not describe myself as independent in relation to that employer. For an outside appointment, the relevant Companies Act criteria, including section 149(6), and applicable SEBI LODR requirements would need assessment for the specific company. Employment, financial interests, client work, investor links, advisers and personal relationships all require disclosure and appropriate review. The proposed committee role must also be considered against its applicable composition requirements and appointment limits. A small shareholding or an executive title does not establish eligibility or independence on its own.

The seat I am pursuing

I would consider an initial board role in a business where measurement evidence is becoming part of a wider commercial product. The fit would depend on whether directors need the perspective described here and whether I can complete the required preparation. I am not offering immediate audit or risk committee chairmanship, laboratory certification or a substitute for specialist legal advice. My experience concerns the questions a board can ask about consequential data choices while preserving management's responsibility for methods and implementation.

Before accepting, I would want a clear account of the company's expectations, relationships and committee needs. The relevant eligibility and independence assessment would remain specific to that enterprise. I registered in the IICA databank in August 2026 in this fictional record, but the proficiency assessment is unfinished and no exemption is asserted. The cases can support a discussion about judgement; they cannot prove effectiveness in a statutory appointment I have never held. I would seek a chair prepared to examine both the contribution and the preparation still required, rather than treat a senior data title as sufficient evidence of board readiness.

IICA Independent Directors’ Databank: Registered

Fictional IICA Independent Directors' Databank registration in August 2026; proficiency assessment unfinished, with no exemption or pass claimed. The applicable requirements would be verified and completed before an actual appointment.

  • I am extending financial and governance preparation beyond my statistical and data-management experience.
  • I want to distinguish a director's challenge to evidence-dependent commitments from management's responsibility for technical methods.
  • The preparation record does not present registration as proof of committee effectiveness or completed assessment.
