Make the unanswered part visible before committing the enterprise

My contribution to a board

I would help a board examine the connection between an observation, the explanation attached to it and the investment that explanation is asked to justify. My experience concerns formulation research software, where a fixed total, a presentation sequence or a laboratory reporting limit can alter what a result supports. I have also had to connect those distinctions with additional expense, product delay and a reduced forecast. That perspective could help directors ask management for a more explicit account of its assumptions without taking over the research. I have no statutory board experience and would need to learn the receiving company's finances, people, sector obligations and governance practice. My contribution would be strongest alongside colleagues with complementary expertise and a chair willing to test my own conclusions. I would not present data leadership as authority to certify a scientific result or decide a product's safety.

Judgement in practice

01

Owning an interpretation that separated what the experiment had changed together

In the 2019 blend case, A increased from 6% to 9% while B fell from 64% to 61%; C remained at 30%. I had approved an explanation that attributed the response to A alone. I withdrew it and supported ₹32 lakh for review and a revised study design. For a board, I would ask whether a proposed product claim is supported by a comparison that distinguishes the explanation being offered. The correction should preserve the original observations, the cost of further work and the unresolved scientific question. It should not become a claim that management has proved the opposite result or created a financial benefit merely by withdrawing an overstatement. My own approval belongs in that account because oversight depends on understanding how the enterprise reached its view and how it responds when the basis is challenged.

02

Funding the recovery of a reporting qualification instead of accepting a convenient average

A 150-result laboratory import included forty observations reported below a 0.2 mg/kg quantification limit. The product had converted them to zero. I supported ₹29 lakh of work over twelve weeks to preserve the qualifier, limit and unit and review affected summaries. At board level, I would ask where a software default turns a professional judgement into an apparently measured fact. The answer should identify who can assess the appropriate analytical treatment, which published accounts need correction and what future product behaviour must change. Restoring the source meaning did not establish absence or safety, and replacing the zeroes with another hidden number would not have resolved the representation problem. The example connects a technical data choice with the credibility of the enterprise's proposition and the resources needed to repair it.

03

Accepting a smaller forecast when the evidence supported a narrower feature

The proposed shelf-life module relied on twenty-one days of observations under one condition. We withdrew the broader promise and retained a trend-view workbench. Annual licence-revenue expectations moved from ₹4.6 crore to ₹1.8 crore; both figures were forecasts. We kept ₹37 lakh discovery expense visible and approved a separate ₹1.2 crore redesign that remains unfinished. I would ask a board whether management has connected the evidential boundary with the investment case, rather than retaining the larger forecast while softening only the wording. The difference between forecasts is not realised money lost or saved. Scientific assessment and capital approval retain their proper owners. My contribution is to show how a changed understanding of the product's answer should change its commercial account and the decision about what work to fund next.

My first year on a board

My first year would begin with the receiving enterprise's own sources of value, obligations and uncertainty. I would seek induction into the financial model, customer relationships, operating responsibilities and applicable sector requirements before interpreting its risks through the software examples I know. Through the chair's agreed process, I would follow several material decisions from proposal to review: what management believed, which evidence it used, who challenged the assumptions and what changed after approval. This would help me understand how the board distinguishes oversight from management's execution. I would ask experienced directors for feedback on the usefulness and proportion of my questions. The aim would be a broader company understanding and better collective judgement, not an additional data-methods review function. Where specialist advice is necessary, I would want the board to understand its scope and limits instead of assuming that my executive background supplies it.

Conflicts and their management

Before receiving confidential material, I would disclose relevant connections through Vemqari's owners, the employee trust, customer organisations and research relationships, together with personal circumstances that could affect the proposed role. Qualified advisers would assess the actual appointment against applicable independence, company-law and listing requirements, including committee and directorship limits where relevant. My trust-beneficiary position needs examination even without direct shares. I would also consider whether a proposed recusal arrangement leaves enough of the board's work for me to contribute usefully. Confidential client experiments, laboratory reports, commercial terms and unpublished product plans from my executive role would not be carried into another enterprise's papers. Employer consent and practical time belong in the same discussion. Relationships can change, so disclosure and review would need to continue through the appropriate governance process rather than ending with an initial declaration. I would decline a role whose constraints prevent a meaningful contribution.

My independence statement

My employee-trust interest and relationships through Vemqari's founders, investment vehicle, customers and research partners need assessment for any proposed appointment. The absence of direct personal shares or a current board seat does not establish independence.

The seat I am pursuing

I am considering one first outside appointment where an enterprise needs thoughtful scrutiny of research-dependent products, technical assumptions or data investment. A risk or technology committee membership could be relevant after the company has assessed the contribution and applicable requirements. I do not claim readiness to chair a committee or statutory service from having presented to a board. The fictional August 2026 proficiency-assessment pass records a preparation step, not a conclusion about eligibility for a specific company. Twenty-four days is a provisional allowance for induction, preparation, meetings, travel and exceptional demands alongside my CDO responsibilities. I would want a complementary board, an experienced chair and a clear learning plan for the parts of the enterprise I do not yet understand. The appointment should rest on a useful role in collective judgement and workable relationships. An attractive title would not compensate for insufficient capacity or an unresolved conflict.

IICA Independent Directors’ Databank: Proficiency assessment passed

The invented career records IICA registration in April 2026 and a proficiency-assessment pass in August 2026, with no exemption. Eligibility, independence and applicable company-law or listing requirements require separate qualified assessment for the proposed seat.

  • Learn the receiving company's financial and operating model beyond the research product
  • Develop collective oversight practice alongside experienced directors
  • Understand the sector's obligations before applying methods from formulation software
