Section · The boardroom
A board should see the undertaking behind the reported completion.
The governance contribution I would bring begins with a question about what management’s operating account has actually established. A figure for warehouse space, order lines or received stock can be accurate and still leave an important condition unresolved. I would want the board to understand that condition before relying on the figure to support a larger commitment. My experience could help form the question; it would not give me authority to bypass the executive organisation or the specialists responsible for the underlying work.
The 2024 order-profile case is an example. The monthly total remained 240000 lines while the balance between full-case and unit-pick work changed substantially. In an operating role, I supported additional resource and kept the commercial discussion with its proper owners. In a board role, I would ask whether a stable headline measure was being used to assume stable work, and how management had examined its own execution alongside the changed requirement. I would not determine the site’s staffing pattern or a customer’s contractual obligation from the boardroom.
The returns account raises a different question about responsibility. Receipt of 18000 units did not establish the same next use for all of them. Authorised sale, pending inspection and approved write-off were separate states, and our ₹42 lakh operating response was not the customer’s stock value. A board should be able to see where custody, customer instruction and financial treatment differ. The contribution I could make would be to ask which decision remains open and who is entitled to make it, rather than resolve the disposition of individual goods myself.
My record also contains an assumption I failed to challenge adequately. The 2011 slotting proposal favoured a shorter picking journey while underweighting replenishment interference at eighteen locations. Revising it cost ₹26 lakh. I would carry that correction into oversight as a reason to examine what an attractive comparison omits. It should also make me more willing to listen when a colleague challenges my own interpretation. Operating experience is useful when it makes a question more precise; it becomes less useful if it is used to end discussion by claiming superior familiarity.
I would want assurance appropriate to the decision. A capacity figure supported by qualified assessment should carry its relevant conditions into the board account. If the proposed undertaking depends on a technical or safety conclusion, the responsible professional evidence must be available through the institution’s process. A director’s commercial preference cannot substitute for it. Equally, a qualification does not automatically invalidate every part of a proposal. The board should understand the supported option, the remaining requirement and the expense of the chosen response.
My employment appointments include a functional director title, followed by the current COO role, but no statutory seat. I have presented to the board as an executive since April 2020. I distinguish that exposure from the collective responsibilities I would need to learn in an actual appointment. My warehouse operating record does not establish the qualifications or experience needed to chair a board committee. A service or operations committee could be relevant where its established remit and the board’s existing expertise made the contribution useful.
Preparation would start with the particular company’s obligations, authorities and sources of assurance. I would need to understand its financial reporting, property commitments and treatment of customer assets, with the support of the appropriate induction and advisers. Familiar logistics terms may describe a different business model from mine. I would not assume that an analogy from one warehouse estate establishes the answer for another institution. The learning requirement should be visible before appointment, not treated as a detail that experience makes unnecessary.
Current customer, property and service-provider relationships would require disclosure and assessment. I would not carry confidential operating records into another company or let the appointment become an informal route to business for my employer. My initial availability of twenty-two days a year is conditional on preparation, meetings, exceptional demands and employer agreement. Indian independent-director databank registration is not yet completed in this fictional profile, and no exemption or eligibility conclusion is claimed. The purpose of this page is to make a proposed contribution assessable. It should never turn an invented demonstration into evidence of a real appointment, qualification or independent status.
On governance
I want to know what has to happen inside the building before I call its space available. Storage, picking, replenishment and returns can compete for the same floor while appearing in different reports. My operating account should make that competition understandable to the customer and the people doing the work. An attractive capacity number is useful only when its conditions remain attached.

I would consider a logistics operating mandate or a first-board discussion where experience of contracted services and customer-owned goods is relevant. Any role would need a clear authority, preparation, conflict assessment and time agreement. This fictional profile is an example of a leadership narrative, with no actual service offer, customer relationship or professional enquiry channel.
