My contribution to a board
I can help a board examine the continuing ownership behind a technology investment. A common platform may reduce repeated work while leaving justified client differences. A purchased component may preserve engineering attention while creating recurring charges and supplier dependence. An AI experiment may produce a useful cost ratio whose population and exclusions do not support a wider forecast. My contribution is to make those distinctions useful to collective judgement, so directors can ask management for the evidence and account needed for a consequential decision.
I served as a non-executive director of Shenlume Instruments from July 2018 to June 2022 and sat on its technology committee. That is actual director experience within this fictional record, separate from presenting to Lanshuren's board as an executive. I have no current directorship. I do not treat the former seat as qualification to chair every committee or as evidence of independence for another company. I would join a suitable technology or strategy discussion while learning the wider business and working with directors whose financial, legal and sector experience complements mine.
Judgement in practice
01A portfolio choice with five continuing exceptions
The workflow consolidation moved sixteen runnable branches to six, including five specialist forks that remained for substantiated client reasons. I supported a result less visually simple than full consolidation because the alternatives carried different commercial and operating consequences. For a board, the question is whether the investment account includes the continuing obligations left outside the headline. I would ask management to explain their ownership and cost rather than assume a reduced branch count completes the transition. The engineering observation of lower maintenance effort would remain separate from an unproved annual financial benefit.
02A useful cost ratio with a limited population
The document-assistance evaluation produced a lower measured inference charge per accepted output on a fixed set of 1,000 requests. I supported a limited trial and declined to treat the result as a forecast for every workflow. In a board discussion, I would ask what population the evidence represents, which costs it excludes and what would challenge the conclusion. The purpose is to examine the proposed use of capital and the uncertainty management retains, not to choose a model from the board table or turn one experiment into an unsupported enterprise claim.
03A purchased component that still needs an owner
The scheduling choice exchanged a larger proposed internal build for a purchased component, integration work and annual licence charges. Four engineers moved to domain workflows, but nobody disappeared from payroll. I would help directors distinguish that allocation of attention from a cash saving and ask whether the product plan gives the redirected work a clear purpose. The tested export route addressed one exit question; it did not establish effortless replacement. A credible investment paper should retain the remaining dependency and renewal obligations so they can be reconsidered when circumstances change.
My first year on a board
For a new board appointment I would first learn how the company makes money, what it has promised its customers and which obligations have the longest life. I would read its financial and strategy material before seeking detailed technical demonstrations. Conversations with the chair, fellow directors and management should establish where my experience can be useful and where I need deeper induction. A company may sell software, use software inside an industrial product or buy it to support a service; those positions create different ownership questions.
I would then follow a small number of important investments from proposal through operating responsibility. The intention would be to understand how management examines alternatives, records uncertainty and learns after approval. I would listen to finance, commercial and operating colleagues alongside engineers. During the year I would ask the chair for feedback on whether my contributions help the whole board reach better decisions. I would not import Lanshuren's practices as a prewritten programme or use my specialist knowledge to bypass the executive responsibilities of the new organisation.
Conflicts and their management
My executive role involves product choices, client delivery architecture and engineering suppliers, so a prospective appointment needs a concrete relationship review. I would disclose relevant employer, client, supplier and advisory connections and examine them with the company secretary and appropriate advisers. Former service at Shenlume Instruments is also part of that account. A past appointment ending does not automatically remove every relevant relationship, and a technical specialism does not create independence by itself.
I would agree how any identified interest affects information access, participation and continuing review under the arrangements applicable to that company. Employer consent and the practical availability of time would need to be established before acceptance. If a material relationship could not be managed appropriately, I would decline the role. I would keep the assessment current as product partnerships and client work change, rather than treating an initial declaration as a permanent answer.
My independence statement
Former director service does not determine independence for a new company. I would assess its ownership, client, supplier, advisory and personal relationships with the company secretary and relevant advisers before accepting an appointment.

The seat I am pursuing
I am interested in an established software, industrial-application or engineering-led business that wants thoughtful challenge about product investment. A suitable chair would expect me to connect technical evidence to enterprise choices while respecting the contribution of other disciplines. I would be open to joining an appropriate technology or strategy committee; I am not presenting myself as ready to chair an audit committee. The usefulness of an appointment depends on the board's actual needs, not on adding a technology title to its membership.
With no current directorship, I can plan twenty-four annual days for a new role, subject to the calendar, induction, travel and periods of exceptional demand. That figure is a planning envelope, not an unconditional promise of availability. Before accepting, I would want to understand how the board works with management, the quality of information it receives and whether its expectations can be met alongside my executive duties. The appointment should permit sustained preparation and independent judgement rather than occasional attendance alone.
