Shahid DezqemtiLeadership review 2026

The boardroom · 2026

A clear recommendation must leave room for qualified disagreement

I regard the strategy function's account of a decision as part of its responsibility. A board cannot examine an alternative it has not been shown, and an apparently precise total can hide several different conditions. That gives the CSO an obligation to make the recommendation intelligible while preserving the authority of colleagues whose professional judgements underpin it. It does not give me the authority to decide an insurance price, approve a claims outcome or substitute a planning assumption for an actuarial assessment.

At Qevzenti I report to CEO Tara Zeqemvi. My twenty-two-person function coordinates enterprise proposals within a ₹6.9 crore annual operating expense remit. Finance head Dev Qevzemti owns financial assessment, and authorised bodies approve funding. Those boundaries matter because a strategy paper can easily make coordination look like control. If I say that I recommended a portfolio or supported a stop decision, I should identify the decision and the role I actually held rather than imply that I personally exercised every approval involved.

The benefits correction in 2018 illustrates the responsibility I do own. I had supported a combined ₹36 crore annual prospective estimate whose component cases overlapped by ₹9 crore. The repair involved finance and operating owners, but I should not use their involvement to move responsibility for the original presentation away from myself. I had defined a review that challenged individual cases without adequately testing whether their benefits could coexist. The corrected ₹27 crore whole-proposal estimate still needed its conditions, and the smaller portfolio subsequently selected needed a separate account.

I want management papers to preserve meaningful dissent. A sponsor who believes that delay will damage an opportunity should be heard, even if my recommendation is to defer. Equally, a specialist who says the available evidence is insufficient should not be treated as an obstacle to a commercial plan. The board needs the substance of those disagreements, not merely a statement that everyone was consulted. In the review-capacity decision, choosing seven initiatives rather than eleven meant recognising both the constraint and the cost to the deferred sponsors.

Conditional scenarios require similar discipline. A model that includes an acquisition before it closes may be useful for preparation, provided the condition remains visible and the organisation understands what it would do without the transaction. I would object to presenting that conditional total as achieved growth or as the uncomplicated trajectory of the existing business. The same care applies to a feasibility exercise: funding a defined test does not confer permission for a full rollout, and a limited test result does not establish the characteristics of an entire market.

I would expect a stop recommendation to include the obligations that survive it. The broker-service platform case compared additional completion expenditure with a funded closeout after the operating proposition changed. Existing service remained separate. Removing a project from the investment list did not remove the company's continuing responsibilities. The decision record needed to identify what work would end, what work would continue, the cost of closing and the people accountable for it. Otherwise a central announcement of closure could simply transfer unresolved work to colleagues without resources.

My own appointment position is also conditional. I hold no statutory directorship and own 0.2% of total equity in Qevzenti through its employee vehicle. The insurer's investor, industrial parent and commercial relationships could intersect with another enterprise. I would disclose relevant connections and seek qualified review of the actual proposed appointment before receiving protected material or presenting independence as established. I would also need employer consent and a realistic assessment of capacity. Twenty-one days is a provisional planning figure, not an assurance that any board calendar would fit.

Databank registration and proficiency assessment have not begun in this fictional record. I would not describe executive presentations as a substitute for those matters or for the experience of collective board responsibility. Initially I would seek to contribute as a committee member after induction, with further responsibility depending on learning, performance and the company's needs. I would bring the questions developed through strategy work while remaining accountable for areas in which I need others' expertise.

All companies, people and circumstances on this site are invented. A commissioned profile should use evidence and permission appropriate to a real leader, and should avoid publishing confidential investment papers, transaction assumptions or specialist assessments. The point of demonstrating judgement is to show how a person reasons and what they remain responsible for. It should not turn a public website into an unauthorised record of somebody else's protected decisions.

On governance

I want the board to see the alternatives before it sees a preferred total. A proposal should make clear which benefits overlap, whose time is required, which assumptions remain conditional and what stopping would leave behind. My role is to improve the choice; professional assessment and approval stay with their proper owners.

I would consider a first outside board contribution after reviewing employer consent, my equity interest and the proposed responsibilities. Databank registration and proficiency assessment have not begun in this fictional record. Twenty-one potential annual days remain provisional, including preparation and exceptional demands.
