The questions I could help a board ask before a digital promise becomes its obligation

My contribution to a board

I could help directors examine who will carry a digital investment after the programme is declared delivered. My experience concerns the receiving service team, the material it can actually use and the dependencies left by supplier and sequencing choices. Those questions can be particularly useful in property businesses, where a building and its operating responsibilities continue through several generations of systems and personnel. I would ask whether management's completion account makes the continuing obligation clear enough for the board to understand the decision it is being asked to support.

My current exposure is through CIO presentations at Velunara, not service as a director. Joining a board would require a broader contribution than reviewing the technology agenda. I would need to understand the enterprise's finances, strategy, duties and relationships, with appropriate induction and continuing learning. I could complement directors with property, commercial and financial depth by examining the handovers inside a digital proposal. I would not seek to become a second management route for facilities staff or an alternative authority over individual tenancy questions. The value should come from improving collective scrutiny while keeping executive responsibility intact.

The seat I am pursuing

I would be most useful in a technology committee discussion about service continuity, supplier dependence and the obligations left by investment. A risk committee contribution could also fit where fellow directors provide the necessary property and financial depth. I do not claim audit-chair readiness or previous board leadership. The right mandate would value practical examination of how an operating team inherits change, with room to question a completion claim without becoming involved in day-to-day delivery. I would prefer a defined contribution and adequate preparation to a broad appointment whose expectations cannot be reconciled with my current executive duties.

Judgement in practice

01

Asking what the recipient can use after the programme closes

The handover review left four packs held because the receiving service still lacked required material or ownership. I would bring that question to a board's consideration of programme completion: what responsibility has actually transferred, and what remains with the delivery team? A file count may show progress without establishing usable handover. Directors should understand the practical consequence of acceptance and the cost of unresolved work. They do not need to inspect each model or determine statutory building status. My experience would help distinguish the digital service commitment from other professional and regulatory conclusions, so the programme's success is recognised without allowing its language to imply assurances it has not established.

02

Keeping the unserved question visible behind an adoption percentage

The portal attracted seventy per cent of the examined contacts, but that did not explain how the remaining telephone enquiries would be handled. I would ask directors to examine the service assumptions behind a digital benefit claim, including the work still needed after a first-contact disposition. A channel measure can be valuable without establishing a final resolution or workforce outcome. The board can challenge the reasoning without deciding individual service cases. I would want management to identify the residual group, the operating owner and the evidence for changing the assisted route. That helps preserve the customer or occupier obligation while still supporting useful digital progress.

03

Treating a supplier option as conditional until its material is usable

The exit rehearsal made 4,850 references portable while 150 still required a specialist viewer. I would bring the distinction between possessing an export and operating a viable alternative to a board discussion about supplier dependence. The remaining renewal and conversion costs should be visible together, rather than turned into a saving by comparing unlike commitments. Directors need to understand which service responsibilities the option can carry and what evidence remains before it can be exercised. My contribution would be to ask for that practical account, including the receiving owner, without turning the board into a procurement negotiation team or assuming that immediate exit is always the preferred result.

My first year on a board

My first priority would be to learn how the enterprise's service commitments survive changes in projects, people and suppliers. Through an agreed induction I would discuss a few recent handovers with the operating leaders who received them, then compare that experience with the completion accounts presented to directors. I would want to understand what the board already examines well and where a concise technology report leaves an important dependency unclear. The purpose would be learning the company's actual conditions, not importing Velunara's systems or acceptance method as a universal answer.

I would study the business model, financial position and governance responsibilities alongside that operational context. For significant digital investments, I would ask how the enterprise defines the result, funds continuing support and assesses future options. I would also learn the chair's expectations for committee work and the way directors should raise questions through management. An effective first year should improve my own breadth while helping the board distinguish delivery, usable service and the obligation still outstanding. It should not create informal instructions to site teams or a parallel technology agenda detached from the enterprise's wider priorities.

Conflicts and their management

A property-related appointment would need careful examination of relationships that may not be apparent from the business description alone. Current and prospective enterprises could share investors, service suppliers, managing agents, occupiers or development partners. I would disclose relevant connections arising from my executive work and examine how access to sensitive material or participation in a decision could affect the duties of the proposed role. I would discuss the particular seat with my employer and obtain advice suited to its duties and relationships. I would not treat the absence of a current directorship as sufficient evidence of independence, and I would revisit the position as relationships changed.

Eighteen annual days is an initial estimate of capacity for meetings and preparation, not a commitment to an unspecified mandate. Induction, travel, committee work and unusual events may require more time than that estimate allows. I would compare the actual expectation with my CIO responsibilities before accepting. I am not registered with the Indian databank; an opportunity in India would need a separate assessment of its applicable requirements. I would decline if the relationship, competence or time conditions could not support a responsible contribution. A leadership website can make these questions visible at the outset, while the appointment process must resolve them for the particular enterprise and seat.

My independence statement

Employment, family and institutional ownership connections, suppliers and property relationships must be assessed for the actual proposed appointment.

I have no Indian databank registration. An Indian board opportunity would need its own review of applicable eligibility and assessment requirements.
