Ask what the screen is entitled to establish

A retail system should preserve what the customer and the specialist have actually agreed, including the details a convincing screen can make easy to overlook.

01

Follow the customer's words into the finished document

A correct entry in a database does not establish that the customer receives a readable or meaningful document. I examine the path through document production, font coverage, delivery and printing with colleagues able to review the relevant languages. Automated checks can identify missing characters, but they cannot settle every ambiguity in a commercial description. A familiar-looking word can still express the wrong product or instruction. The business therefore needs a review process that distinguishes rendering defects from meaning corrections, with the appropriate commercial owner responsible for the latter. I would rather disclose the remaining manual review than describe a multilingual service as complete because its software supports a character set. The outcome is a document the customer can examine, not a claim that technology alone has supplied translation expertise or established the customer's informed agreement.

02

Resolve competing plans before treating either as agreed

Two people can improve different parts of a room plan while creating versions that cannot safely be combined without review. I work with the application team and the responsible survey or installation specialists to make those competing revisions visible. A timestamp tells us which file arrived later; it does not tell us whether its author intended to withdraw an earlier change. The software should preserve the relevant history and prevent an unresolved branch from being mistaken for an agreed instruction. That does not mean an IT team can approve room measurements or design a technical merge rule that replaces professional judgement. My responsibility is to give the decision an intelligible place in the workflow, assign the review and make the resulting version clear to the people who will use it. Exceptions remain work to resolve, not evidence that the system has failed merely by exposing them.

03

Connect retained recordings with an approved purpose

Remote consultations can leave recordings that reveal more about a customer's home than the final order needs. I ask what each class of material is retained for, who can see it and how the business knows when the purpose has ended. Legal, privacy and commercial colleagues must help determine the appropriate treatment; a CIO should not invent one universal deletion date or disregard a valid preservation requirement. The technical work includes finding copies, limiting access, implementing the approved action and keeping evidence of that action without reproducing the sensitive material unnecessarily. A storage reduction is incidental to the judgement. I want the company to be able to explain why it still holds a recording and how that explanation changes as the project closes, a dispute arises or another legitimate requirement is identified through the proper process.

04

Test the interpretation created by a convincing image

A retail visualiser can help a customer discuss layout while being unable to establish the exact appearance of a physical material in a particular home. I assess that distinction through what viewers actually understand, not only through what the demonstration script says. A disclaimer that is technically present may not correct the inference created by the image itself. Product, commercial and technical colleagues need to define the supported use together, including where a physical sample or specialist advice remains necessary. If a narrower service is all the evidence supports, the investment review should consider that narrower service honestly. I do not regard expenditure already incurred as a reason to preserve an unsupported proposition. My contribution is to bring the interpretive risk into the same decision as the software's usefulness, operating cost and commercial ambition.

A leadership conviction

I ask what the screen is entitled to tell the person looking at it. A legible name, a current room plan and a plausible colour image are different kinds of evidence, and the system should not quietly make them interchangeable.
