A commissioned guide should not borrow an editorial relationship it does not have

Commercially funded material can be useful without being presented as independent research. The proposition must explain who shapes the work before a reader or commissioner relies on the publisher's reputation.

A leadership conviction

The confidence a reader places in a publication should not be borrowed by a commercial proposition that withholds its own terms.

The reader deserved to know who paid

Maryam laid the commissioning terms beside the brochure I had approved. The brochure described a programme of guides as independent research. The terms gave the paying organisations control over the questions and final approval of their commissioned material. Both documents could not describe the same editorial relationship honestly. I had allowed the publisher's reputation to do work that the commercial explanation had avoided. Correcting the description meant accepting that some prospective clients wanted the ambiguity we needed to remove.

I am Rehana Qevnari, fictional CMO of Qemzori Trade Publishing in Lucknow. We publish packaging-industry reporting and professional briefings, alongside separately commissioned commercial guides. The company has 138 employees and ₹52 crore FY 26 revenue. My eighteen marketing colleagues work through three leads within ₹4.6 crore FY 2026–27 expense, including ₹2.3 crore campaign authority. Maryam controls editorial judgement. Marketing must explain the different products without selling access to her conclusions or implying that every item carrying our distribution has the same origin.

I began in book-services catalogues in 1997, where a concise description could help an institution choose or leave it expecting something absent from the actual publication. Later roles taught me to examine the subscription promise, the archive it included, the meaning of an audience count and the setting in which a professional reader used the work. Those questions still guide my marketing decisions. A larger number or simpler package can be useful, but only when the reader and advertiser can understand what it represents.

Commissioned material identified on its own terms

Eight proposed guides were offered under clearer commercial descriptions. Five commissioners accepted and three withdrew, removing ₹36 lakh of anticipated bookings from the pipeline. The ₹18 lakh revision programme did not claim those bookings had been recognised revenue or that clear labelling alone established editorial independence.

Archive access described by the available issues

Among 180 back issues examined for the subscription proposition, 142 were cleared and digitally available, 26 needed rights clarification and 12 had not been digitised. A ₹27 lakh review supported a specified 142-issue offering, with the other 38 outside the promised archive until their separate conditions were resolved.

An audience account that kept eligibility separate from use

The institutional offer covered 240 employer licences and 9,600 allocated accounts. 3,710 accounts had signed in during the examined sixty days; 2,120 met the defined reading-event measure in the final thirty days. A ₹22 lakh review replaced a 9,600-reader claim with the separate measures, without turning accounts into a verified count of individual people.

Current focus

Making publication provenance, subscription scope, audience measures and professional reading conditions clear enough to support a fair commercial decision.

As Rehana's CEO, I saw her put the three withdrawn guide prospects and the revision expense into the same account as the clearer proposition. She did not present anticipated bookings as revenue or ask the editor to carry responsibility for a marketing sentence she had approved.
