Begin with the decision the evidence must support

The best-looking model I approved knew something the business could not yet know. I now begin with the decision date, the available evidence and the action a result would justify.

01

Model evaluation at the moment a decision must be made

I examine whether each input would actually exist when the business intends to use a prediction. A retrospective file can contain later events that make the past appear easier to predict than the future will be. The evaluation also needs a suitable comparison, an account of mistakes and a clear proposed action. A high percentage alone does not establish commercial usefulness. My role connects those conditions with the model and explains where the evidence remains incomplete. Operating and commercial owners retain the decision about how a supported result should be used. The capability is not to demand perfect prediction, but to prevent a performance claim from borrowing knowledge unavailable at the real decision point or obscuring the consequences of being wrong for the customer and the enterprise.

02

Demand research that recognises what the service made possible

Completed hires reflect both customer interest and the equipment the business could offer. I examine availability, requests and the conditions of collection before treating a transaction count as a market comparison. A low count may justify investigation without proving weak demand, and dividing by available days does not reconstruct what would have happened on the others. Research must be designed around the actual choice, with appropriate limits on customer data collection. My contribution helps operating and financial colleagues decide what further evidence is needed before a depot or fleet commitment. It does not decide equipment safety or substitute an analytical estimate for observed customer requests. The useful result is a more precise account of what the existing records can answer and which uncertainty still affects the investment.

03

Commercial experiments with a decision beyond the headline result

I help define what an intervention is intended to change and how the enterprise will assess the result before it sees a favourable number. Random assignment can strengthen a comparison, but a small trial still requires attention to uncertainty, costs, implementation and whether groups influenced each other. The observed difference should remain tied to its population and period. My responsibility is to make those conditions visible and connect the evidence with a proportionate next step. A second planned evaluation may be more useful than either immediate rollout or dismissal of a modest result. Commercial owners decide the programme and finance examines its economics. Data work supports that judgement without presenting every positive difference as a settled effect or a profitable intervention across customers never included in the trial.

04

Business-activity reporting with context around identifiability

A table can reveal a customer's activity even when direct names have been removed. I examine the size and composition of reporting groups, the likely outside knowledge of recipients and the purpose of releasing the account. A group dominated by one business may require a different treatment from a broad aggregate. No single suppression number establishes that every remaining report is anonymous. Qualified privacy, legal and commercial owners review the proposed use and its conditions; the data team supplies the structure and evidence they need. My contribution balances useful market reporting with the limits of what customers reasonably expect the enterprise to disclose. The goal is an account appropriate to its purpose, with residual risks understood rather than hidden behind the absence of a name column.

A leadership conviction

A result becomes useful when someone can say what was knowable at the decision point and what action the evidence supports. An impressive score cannot answer those questions on its own.
