Product architecture and the commercial range5 min read
One case could not carry every promise
I backed a universal transport case, then accepted a modular family with two explicit exclusions. The difficult correction was to the offer as well as the engineering.
A design becomes credible when its limits can be explained as clearly as its advantages. I want the next person to understand which equipment it serves, what a repair changes and what the return journey costs.

Repair architecture and product responsibility5 min read
The appeal of a replaceable corner was real. So were the thirteen returns outside its process and the five eligible cases that remained held after the work.
Nesting sixty cases reduced their measured empty volume and increased the handling work. A useful product decision needed both facts, with the environmental question still open.
One case could not carry every promise
I supported a universal transport case because a single family seemed easier to make, stock and explain. The difficulty appeared when we placed different instruments inside the proposition. A common outer casing did not make their support needs identical. Our first defined assessment supported twelve of eighteen configurations. The other six were not a presentation problem. They were evidence that the commercial promise had become broader than the engineering account.
I am Ananya Qelmethi, fictional CTO of Veznoru Transit Cases in Hubballi. We design, make and rent reusable cases for touring musical equipment, with 215 employees and₹92 crore FY 26 revenue. My 31 engineering colleagues work through four leads within₹5.2 crore FY 2026–27 operating expense, with₹1.8 crore capital separately approved. We do not operate a carrier or certify an instrument's condition. Our product work must connect with the judgement of the people responsible for handling, testing, manufacture and the actual equipment.
Twenty-nine years in mechanical product development have taught me to follow a design beyond its first successful use. Can an eligible damaged corner be repaired without disguising an unresolved condition elsewhere? Does nesting an empty case reduce transport volume while asking for more handling work? Can a partner receive a defined repair drawing without receiving permission to alter every part of the product? These questions change tooling, commercial terms and the scope of the offer. They belong in a CTO's account alongside the attractive prototype.
A family of supported configurations
The₹64 lakh development programme moved from a universal insert to a modular family. Sixteen of eighteen defined instrument configurations met the revised assessment, while two remained outside the standard offer. The result supported a narrower product account; it did not establish protection on every real journey or authorise unsuitable packing.
Repair eligibility before a return-to-service count
Of thirty-six selected returned cases, twenty-three were eligible for the defined corner-repair process and thirteen were not. Eighteen eligible cases completed their required release checks; five remained held. The programme used₹17 lakh for jigs and₹9 lakh for training. A replaceable component did not make every damaged case repairable.
Less empty volume with more handling work
For sixty cases in a selected loading exercise, nesting reduced measured volume from 42 to 29 cubic metres while handling effort rose from 38 to 57 person-minutes. The₹28 lakh pilot covered two design families. Its account retained both measures and made no comparative life-cycle or universal freight-saving claim.
Current focus
Supported product families, inspectable repair decisions, empty-return economics and controlled access to repair drawings.

As CEO, I saw Ananya revise the universal-case proposition she had supported. She explained the sixteen supported configurations and two exclusions as a commercial decision, including the additional variation we would need to manage.
