Replacing the identity of six paper shops would have simplified our estate and confused some of their customers. The brand decision needed to account for the continuity the acquisition was meant to preserve.
I liked the first design. It made our new paper shops look like members of the Zelquari estate, used a familiar visual system and gave the acquisition a visible conclusion. Those were real advantages. They were also advantages seen mainly from the acquiring business. Thirty-seven of eighty-four people in selected customer conversations interpreted the proposed replacement sign as a closure or a complete change of the shops they knew. Their reading exposed something our presentation had not asked clearly enough: what did the acquisition promise to preserve, and how would a customer recognise that promise?
