The number was copied correctly and described wrongly

The numbers I first worked with came from fields, samples and people describing a physical condition. A spreadsheet could make them look uniform long before their meaning was actually comparable. I learned to preserve the question behind the measurement, but later approved a dashboard that failed that test. It displayed gross vehicle weight as received residue. The mistake was simple to describe after discovery and consequential because the display looked complete enough to support planning.

I completed statistics studies at Dalqevri Statistical College in May 1997 and joined Nezqlavri Agricultural Research in June. Seven people formed the supervised research-data group. I prepared records and checked completeness without independently selecting sampling methods or certifying findings. Field colleagues taught me to ask what had been weighed, sampled or classified before treating a recorded number as a transferable fact. The same label could conceal different collection conditions, and a clean table could make those differences harder to notice.

In April 2004 I became project-data coordinator, leading eleven colleagues within ₹1.2 crore annual data-delivery expense. Client research programmes and professional approvals remained separate. I worked across field records, laboratory returns and analytical summaries. The role required patient discussions about units, sample identity and the period a result described. I wanted those qualifications to remain visible after the data left the person who understood its origin. Moving into a continuing supply business offered a chance to see what happened when the same records supported purchasing and material decisions repeatedly.

Daqzerli Bioenergy Inputs appointed me data-stewardship manager in April 2011. Eighteen colleagues worked within ₹2.6 crore annual function expense. The enterprise handled agricultural residues and needed a coherent account of incoming material, storage and dispatch. I learned how lots could be divided or combined and why a business identifier was not always a sufficient account of physical history. Quality colleagues retained responsibility for sampling and acceptance. Our role was to preserve the relationships and definitions they needed, rather than let a convenient data structure decide what had happened to the material.

Promotion to head of supply information in April 2017 expanded my remit to twenty-five colleagues and ₹4.1 crore annual expense. In 2018 I approved a dashboard showing 420 tonnes as received residue across forty weighings. The total was gross loaded-vehicle weight; 120 tonnes of corresponding tare had not been deducted in the displayed measure. Net material was 300 tonnes. I had checked that the imported values matched their source and failed to examine the meaning of the label I authorised. Withdrawing the view required me to explain that the data product, not the physical stock, had changed when the correction was made.

Since April 2022 I have been CDO, reporting to CEO Hemant Qelvzathi. Three heads lead thirty-four employees within ₹5.9 crore annual operating expense, with a distinct ₹1.4 crore evidence programme. Quality head Tara Vaqzelri helps connect data definitions with the physical and laboratory account. In 2023 we reconstructed lineage across sixty outbound lots rather than force every dispatch into a single-parent model. In 2025 we examined the denominators and sampling context behind moisture percentages before allowing them into a common comparison. Both reviews preserved unresolved cases rather than fill a field for the sake of a complete-looking dashboard.

The company employs 380 people and recorded ₹214 crore revenue for the year ending March 2026: ₹184 crore material sales and ₹30 crore handling services. Founders own 47 percent, an industrial investor 41 percent and an employee vehicle 12 percent. My CDO appointment includes neither personal equity nor statutory director membership. Those facts describe my context without transferring procurement, laboratory or customer-operating authority to the data function. A traceable record supports those decisions; it does not replace the qualified judgement needed to make them. Nor does lineage alone establish a sustainability or emissions claim about the material.

I would seek another role where preserving meaning is part of delivery acceptance, not a separate clean-up exercise after a system launches. A board contribution would require learning and assessment beyond my executive presentations. I could help directors ask whether an aggregate still describes the physical thing management says it describes, and what remains unknown after correction. I would not offer informal laboratory certification or access to private supplier records. The lesson from the gross-weight dashboard remains direct: a number copied without error can still become a wrong answer when the presentation changes what readers believe it measures.

Perspectives from colleagues

Shabnam corrected a measure she had approved without describing the change as a physical loss. She made the business meaning part of data acceptance.

She keeps the source lot and measurement basis visible, including the records we cannot yet compare. Data completeness never substitutes for the qualified evidence we still need.
