The assumptions beneath a bank's plan
The price of a deposit is only part of its cost.
01
Renewal assumptions that deserve a separate conversation
I examine deposit maturity schedules alongside the circumstances that may connect several customers' decisions. A historical renewal percentage is useful evidence, but it should not be treated as a promise about the next period. My team records the contractual date, the behavioural assumption and the source of any branch observation separately. We then test how a different outcome would affect the funding position presented to the asset-liability committee. I do not ask branch managers to promise that familiar customers will renew. I ask them to identify what they know, when they last checked it and what remains uncertain. The committee can then weigh liquidity, pricing and growth options with a clearer view of the assumptions involved. The cost of holding additional liquidity belongs in that discussion rather than being hidden as a finance precaution without commercial consequences.
02
A branch's contribution beyond its opening budget
The capital cost of a branch is often easier to estimate than its incremental contribution. I ask whether proposed deposits are new to the bank, transferred from existing locations or dependent on a pricing concession. I also examine relief staffing, cash handling, connectivity and supervision rather than stopping at rent and furniture. These are financial planning questions, not a substitute for the business team's assessment of demand or the required approval process. My analysis gives decision-makers a range of plausible outcomes and identifies which assumptions matter most. Where a branch has a service-access purpose that cannot be justified through direct contribution alone, I want that purpose stated openly. A board may choose to fund it, but it should not have to accept a fragile commercial forecast to make the choice respectable.
03
Explaining earnings when an unusual item dominates
A recovery from an old account can improve reported results without changing the earning capacity of the current business. I reconcile the reported position to a clearly defined management view that separates unusual items, while keeping the statutory accounts and their treatment intact. The purpose is explanation, not the invention of a preferred profit figure. I show which adjustments are proposed, why they matter and how the comparison would look without them. Credit and audit colleagues retain responsibility for the evidence and treatment within their respective remits. I use the analysis when discussing recurring expenditure, because a one-off benefit is a weak basis for a permanent cost commitment. Directors should be able to see both the actual reported result and the narrower question the management comparison is intended to answer.
04
Small finance teams with visible review responsibility
With nine colleagues, I cannot solve every control issue by creating another specialist department. I make preparation, review and approval responsibilities explicit and test what happens when the usual reviewer is absent. A schedule can be technically complete while its most consequential assumption has received no challenge. We use a small number of recurring review questions and retain the supporting explanation when an estimate changes. I also distinguish a late source record from a finance processing delay, because the remedies differ. My function budget includes training and cover for critical routines rather than assuming experienced people are continuously available. The objective is a reporting process that another qualified colleague can follow, not one that works only because the CFO remembers how an unusual entry was handled several years ago.
A leadership conviction
I want a funding proposal to explain who can withdraw, when a balance may reprice and what assumption the bank is making about renewal. An attractive quarter-end total can conceal an expensive dependency. My finance team should make that dependency visible while there is still time for the authorised committee to choose another course.
