Understand the deposits behind the balance

Chief Financial Officer India

The price of a deposit is only part of its cost.

I completed my commerce degree in 1994 and joined Nivralti Credit Cooperative in Karimganj that June. The organisation served its members and was not a bank. My first responsibilities were bookkeeping, supporting schedules and explanations for differences between records. A senior colleague taught me to distinguish an account entry from a cash movement. The distinction sounded elementary until a receipt recorded late changed the explanation of a weekly position. I learnt to retain the original date and supporting document rather than make the latest report appear tidier than the underlying sequence.

I want a funding proposal to explain who can withdraw, when a balance may reprice and what assumption the bank is making about renewal. An attractive quarter-end total can conceal an expensive dependency. My finance team should make that dependency visible while there is still time for the authorised committee to choose another course.

I make the renewal assumptions behind a small bank's balance sheet available for challenge.

I am chief financial officer of Tevrunsha Cooperative Bank in Silchar. At March 2026, our six-branch institution held ₹310 crore of deposits and ₹230 crore of gross advances, with 86 employees. I lead a nine-person finance team and report to the chief executive. My responsibility covers financial reporting, budgeting and the evidence used in funding discussions. Credit sanction, investment dealing and statutory audit have their own owners; a CFO title does not combine those authorities in one person.

My first job in 1994 was bookkeeping at a member credit cooperative. I learnt to distinguish a member's account balance from the timing of the money the organisation could actually use. Moving into banking later exposed me to branch economics, deposit renewal patterns and the tension between local relationships and aggregate funding assumptions. I am interested in the point where a familiar customer story becomes a number in a planning model, especially when nobody has checked whether the story still holds.

Recent decisions include changing the assumptions attached to a cluster of large deposit renewals, challenging the financial case for a proposed branch and separating a one-off recovery from recurring earnings. None was a solitary finance achievement. Branch managers, treasury colleagues, credit staff and directors held different pieces of the evidence. My role was to make the disagreement explicit, show the cost of each option and preserve the distinction between a recommendation and the authority to approve it.

₹310 crore deposits

The March 2026 balance describes customer funding at a date. I also show concentration and maturity patterns so that a larger total is not automatically treated as more dependable funding.

₹22 crore renewal cluster examined

Fourteen related timing events were reviewed separately rather than rolled into one assumed renewal rate. The exercise led the asset-liability committee to retain a larger short-term liquidity cushion.

One branch proposal redesigned

A ₹1.6 crore initial investment proposal was deferred while service demand and staffing assumptions were tested. The revised proposal remained subject to the bank's approval process and applicable permissions.

Current focus

I am improving the connection between branch observations and funding forecasts, with particular attention to assumptions that survive in spreadsheets after customer circumstances change.

Conversations I welcome

I am open to a future finance leadership remit in a regional financial institution and an initial board discussion with a non-competing services company, subject to consent and eligibility assessment.
