Question the certainty a system appears to offer

My contribution to a board

I would bring experience of the point where a system description stops matching the decision it is meant to support. In our service business, visit closure, technical acceptance and customer release involve different responsibilities. A director should be able to ask which decision a reported number represents and what remains unresolved. I would also examine the resources required to correct an information problem, including reconciliation, specialist review and support after implementation. My contribution would be strongest where the board needs to understand a technical-service information estate without assuming that software can decide every underlying question. I would rely on qualified engineering, legal and other advisers for matters outside my competence. Executive experience gives me examples to test a proposal; it does not entitle me to direct the receiving company's staff or approve their technical work from the boardroom.

The seat I am pursuing

I would consider a first non-executive appointment at an equipment-service, industrial-maintenance or related support enterprise with an experienced chair. A member contribution to technology or risk oversight would be more appropriate than claiming readiness to chair a committee immediately. I have presented information proposals to directors but have not carried statutory director responsibility. My governance preparation and registration work remain unfinished and should be discussed directly during a nomination process. A suitable company would want questions about information meaning, ownership and the conditions of a systems investment, while maintaining qualified technical management. I would ask what learning the board expects from me and what contribution it believes my experience can make. The seat should provide a proper opportunity to exercise director judgement, rather than use a board title to obtain application advice or imply professional qualifications I do not possess.

Judgement in practice

01

A completion measure should identify the decision it actually represents

The nineteen outstanding technical decisions among sixty-four closed visits showed how an apparently favourable measure could conceal a different state of work. At board level I would ask management to define the reported completion and identify the authority behind it. The answer should explain the reviewed scope and avoid extending a sample finding to the entire estate without evidence. Directors would then consider the proposed correction, cost, temporary arrangements and responsibilities. They should not decide the technical disposition of individual equipment through a discussion of the application. I would also ask whether an investment proposal includes the specialist time needed to resolve affected records, since software changes alone may leave the underlying questions open. The useful challenge is whether the reported information supports the decision directors are being asked to make, not whether a status display can be made more reassuring.

02

An information repair may need to preserve an unresolved history

The serial collision and offline-edit cases both required us to resist a tidy but unsupported answer. Copying a merged history to two assets or keeping only the last arriving edit would have made the screen easier to read while removing important uncertainty. A board should understand what management can establish, what still needs review and which owner can resolve it. I would ask about the cost and duration of that work, the conditions for wider use and the evidence behind a claim that a repair is complete. An unresolved link should not be treated as a permanent excuse for weak records, but the desire to close a programme cannot justify inventing certainty. Directors need the distinction between a working control, the results of a defined test and assurance about continuing operation. I would expect management to explain each separately.

My first year on a board

My first year would begin with the company's service model, technical responsibilities and information flows. I would ask the chair to arrange discussions that follow a small number of records from field activity through specialist review to the management account. The purpose would be to understand where meaning or authority can change, not to conduct an informal systems audit of my own. I would review previous investment decisions and the resources assigned to correction and support. Twenty-four days is my provisional annual allowance for preparation, meetings, induction and travel, subject to employer consent and the actual calendar. A significant incident or programme could require additional time. I would seek feedback from experienced directors on whether my questions improve oversight or pull the board toward implementation. The receiving business may use familiar technology under very different contracts and professional obligations from those I know.

Conflicts and their management

I would disclose my employment and relationships with institutional customers, equipment manufacturers, service partners and information suppliers before accepting confidential material for a proposed role. My lack of equity does not remove those relationships. The company would need suitable advice on independence and committee eligibility for the actual appointment. I would not bring Qerthuni's service histories, customer equipment details or vendor arrangements into another organisation's discussion. A recurring conflict involving the receiving company's core service could make the role unsuitable even if a single isolated matter could be managed. I would also clarify the distinction between a director contribution and an informal technical consultancy. Employer consent, time and the ability to participate in the main decisions are practical conditions of the appointment. I would prefer to decline a seat that required regular withdrawal from the subjects for which my experience was sought.

My independence statement

I have no Qerthuni equity and no statutory directorship. Employment and commercial relationships would still require an appointment-specific independence and conflict review; absence of a shareholding does not settle that assessment.
