Internal Audit Plan Recovery Director mandate in Mumbai, India
Confidential Internal Audit Plan Recovery Director in Mumbai, India, reporting to the Audit Committee Chair. Interim Internal & Statutory Audit appointment at Director level, a 8-month mandate horizon; five days a week.
The mandate
The interim Director will recover an internal-audit plan affected by delayed fieldwork, inconsistent scoping and unresolved reporting. The immediate objective is not to clear a backlog indiscriminately. It is to determine which coverage remains decision-relevant, close or rescope weak work and protect committee visibility over the risks that matter now. Mobilisation is required within fifteen business days.
The assignment begins with a file-level triage of planned, active and draft audits, followed by a risk-based recovery schedule. Evidence, ratings and issue ownership must be strengthened without allowing timetable pressure to create premature conclusions. Work that no longer addresses a live risk should be stopped transparently.
Temporary authority covers plan reprioritisation recommendations, audit scope, team deployment, file-quality gates, ratings and escalation of access restrictions. Management control ownership, disciplinary action and remediation delivery are outside scope. Material plan changes require the Audit Committee's approval.
Handover starts by month three with appointment of a permanent audit leader. The successor must chair two plan reviews, approve two reports, validate one high-risk issue and present the closing outlook to the Committee. The interim Director leaves only after these tests and the residual coverage map are accepted.
What you will own
- Triage every open engagement within twenty business days by current risk relevance, evidence sufficiency, completion effort and committee need.
- Recommend a recovered plan that states cancelled, deferred, rescoped and accelerated work alongside the coverage consequence.
- Establish file gates for scope approval, evidence traceability, supervisory review, rating calibration and report release.
- Close unsupported legacy drafts through additional testing, explicit limitation or formal withdrawal rather than negotiated wording.
- Create weekly delivery control over milestones, review notes, access barriers, emerging findings and resource contention.
- Revalidate overdue high-risk issues using evidence proportionate to the original exposure and claimed remediation.
- Restore direct, concise committee reporting on plan confidence, unresolved restrictions and residual assurance gaps.
- Certify the permanent successor through live scope, report, validation and committee tests before departure.
Candidate qualifications
- At least 15 years in internal audit, including Director-level recovery or acting-chief-audit leadership under fixed committee dates.
- Chartered Accountant membership with ICAI in good standing, plus CIA or CISA where the candidate's portfolio includes specialist coverage.
- Evidence of stopping or rescoping overdue audits because their original objective was no longer risk-relevant.
- Strong audit-file judgement across planning, sampling, evidence sufficiency, supervision, ratings and limitation language.
- A case where you resisted pressure to issue a report before evidence could support the conclusion.
- Experience distinguishing management remediation from independent issue validation and preserving that boundary during recovery.
- Availability for full-time on-site work in Mumbai and a rapid start followed by structured permanent-leader transfer.
Working terms and boundaries
- The interim term is eight months at five days weekly; a two-month extension is restricted to failed handover or approved recovery criteria.
- Temporary authority covers audit work, ratings, team deployment and access escalation; management controls and remediation remain excluded.
- Plan cancellation, deferral or material scope reduction requires a documented coverage consequence and Committee decision.
- The successor assumes review authority by month six and must complete all four live acceptance tests.
- Completion requires a credible forward plan, controlled files, transparent residual gaps and signed committee handover.
