Executive Decision-Cockpit Design Director

The mandate

This commission will design an executive decision cockpit that joins financial outlook, leading drivers, scenarios, actions and trigger status in one governed view. The work is not a dashboard beautification exercise or a technology implementation. It must begin with recurring decisions, prove use through simulation and parallel operation, and end with a testable specification and internal ownership.

Five artifacts define delivery: decision inventory, information-and-control architecture, interactive prototype, simulated and live-use findings, and production-neutral implementation dossier. The design must show uncertainty and provenance at the point of use, rather than hiding them behind a confidence-inducing visual layer.

Milestones land at weeks four, ten, seventeen, twenty-four and twenty-eight. The Sponsor accepts inventory and architecture; designated executives accept prototype and use findings; the steering group accepts the dossier. Acceptance requires source traceability, financial reconciliation, decision completion within the agreed window and closure of critical usability defects.

Client inputs are named executive decisions, approved management views, measure definitions, source-control contacts, access to two decision forums and timely feedback from authorised users. The consultant will not connect production systems or repair underlying data. Unresolved limitations remain visible and receive owners in the final specification.

What you will own

• Catalogue recurring executive decisions by owner, frequency, information lead time, options, trigger and required follow-through.
• Design an information hierarchy connecting outcome, driver, assumption, confidence, scenario, action and accountable owner.
• Establish provenance and reconciliation controls that allow users to trace material figures without leaving the decision context.
• Prototype a concise cockpit with explicit ranges, trigger state, decision history and overdue-action visibility.
• Run two simulated decisions to test interpretation under uncertainty and capture hesitation, misuse and missing evidence.
• Operate the prototype alongside two live forums and measure decision time, clarification loops and action traceability.
• Produce a production-neutral specification with semantic rules, permissions, tests, dependencies and acceptance criteria.
• Transfer ownership through an internal facilitation session and defect triage completed without consulting intervention.

Candidate qualifications

• At least 14 years in FP&A, executive decision support, information design or performance architecture at Director level.
• Evidence that a decision cockpit changed action speed or quality, with clear separation from mere visual redesign.
• Expertise in financial reconciliation, information hierarchy, scenario communication, trigger design, provenance and usability testing.
• A case where you exposed uncertainty prominently despite sponsor pressure for a cleaner single answer.
• Experience testing executive tools through simulations and live decision forums with measurable acceptance criteria.
• Ability to create implementation-ready semantic and control specifications without prescribing a particular technology stack.
• Demonstrated handover through internal operation, defect prioritisation and ownership of unresolved limitations.

Working terms and boundaries

• The project lasts seven months at four days weekly, with scheduled Lisbon travel for discovery, simulations and final transfer.
• Scope includes architecture, prototype, use testing and specification; production integration, data remediation and ongoing reporting are excluded.
• The consultant may recommend presentation and control decisions but cannot approve executive actions or financial outlooks.
• Named decisions, approved views, definition owners, forum access and user feedback are client-supplied dependencies.
• Completion requires reconciled live use, closed critical usability defects and an accepted production-neutral dossier.
