Thirty-one employees through four leads; five external research specialists separately
Financial scope
₹6.2 crore annual data-function expense

Mandate

Preserve the definitions, source conditions and release histories supporting the publisher's research conclusions.

Outcomes

  • Retained identifiable first-release and latest monthly research series.
  • Narrowed a panel study's claim to its supported respondent population.
  • Connected licensed-source conditions to the external product's actual use.
  • Preserved supported and unresolved classification mappings in comparative research.

Decisions in context

The CDO appointment brought responsibility for thirty-one data employees working through four leads, alongside five external research specialists counted separately. My ₹6.2 crore annual function expense is distinct from the enterprise's ₹82 crore revenue and 145 employees. I report to Salma and have neither a personal equity holding nor a statutory seat. The remit concerns the account behind research publication: definitions, source conditions, coverage and identifiable releases. Methodology, legal, licensing and commercial colleagues retain their own decisions. The later cases show where that arrangement required a narrower claim or a less convenient product. They do not suggest that the publisher operates electricity assets or advises customers which contract to buy. A possible outside appointment remains exploratory, with twenty-two days provisionally identified and registration and assessment preparation unfinished. The current role gives a specific research-data perspective, rather than an entitlement to make every judgement surrounding a dataset.

Reason for the move

Current role; considering a first outside contribution after preparation and relationship review.

Twenty-three data colleagues
Financial scope
₹4.4 crore annual function expenditure

Mandate

Coordinate the evidence and interpretation supporting research summaries and their publication.

Outcomes

  • Approved an equal-contract mean under a pooled-volume description.
  • Accepted the methodology challenge and owned the interpretation error.
  • Preserved the two valid questions, underlying quantities and correction expense.

Decisions in context

This director title was a functional employment designation, without a statutory appointment. I led twenty-three colleagues and ₹4.4 crore annual expense in a publisher then employing 118 people. The 2018 averaging case arose during this period. I approved a ₹5,000 equal-contract mean as though it described the pooled purchased volume; the supported pooled result was ₹5,800 per MWh. Nitin's challenge made the difference between those questions explicit. Review and correction cost ₹43 lakh, and I retained responsibility for the interpretation I had approved. The source prices themselves were accurate within the invented study. The lesson was not that complicated arithmetic is inherently superior, but that an approval needs to preserve what the calculation is intended to describe. That experience shaped my later stewardship of revisions, coverage and classification without making every future research judgement self-evidently correct.

Reason for the move

Appointed CDO with wider responsibility for the research product's evidence and release account.

Concurrent appointment

Functional director title only; no statutory directorship or concurrent board service.

Financial scope
₹2.5 crore annual function expenditure

Mandate

Maintain the evidence account behind recurring research series and the definitions used across releases.

Outcomes

  • Moved from general research services into a specialist publishing enterprise.
  • Developed attention to the relationship between successive research releases.
  • Separated the population observed from broader industrial claims.

Decisions in context

Joining Qezramthi in September 2010 placed me closer to recurring publications used by business readers. I managed fifteen colleagues and ₹2.5 crore annual expenditure in a ninety-five-person enterprise. The same series could return to a reader repeatedly, with changing observations or definitions. That made the history of the account more consequential than the completion of a single assignment. I wanted a later colleague to understand what an earlier release had said, while recognising that the current research could legitimately differ. The appointment also exposed me to the limits of selected industrial respondents. Our publisher's specialist focus did not make its panel a description of every industrial user in India. Reporting to the research director kept methodological responsibility distinct from stewardship of the source and release account. The work established interests developed later, rather than providing a finished answer to every issue of comparison.

Reason for the move

Promoted to functional director of research data as publication responsibilities expanded.

₹78 lakh annual function expenditure

Mandate

Coordinate a reproducible source account across contributors while preserving the definitions needed for interpretation.

Outcomes

  • Took responsibility for staff and a defined function budget.
  • Made source definitions part of the account passed into research analysis.
  • Developed an interest in recurring publications and their longer evidence histories.

Decisions in context

The June 2002 promotion gave me eight colleagues and ₹78 lakh annual function expense. The employer had eighty employees and ₹26 crore FY2003 revenue, separate measures of enterprise scale. I became responsible for consistency across work assembled by several contributors. A column could move between extracts while the explanation of its period or population remained behind. I wanted those definitions to travel with the records into analysis and client discussion. This was data management within research services, not control over the client's resulting business decision. Research specialists still assessed methods and the intended interpretation. Managing the team taught me to distinguish an orderly delivery from a well-supported claim. Over time I became more interested in publications that returned to the same subject repeatedly, where definitions and revisions acquired a history that readers needed to understand. That interest led to the move into series data.

Reason for the move

Joined a specialist publisher to work on research series and repeated releases.

Mandate

Assemble and examine source records while retaining the units, periods and population definitions needed by supervising researchers.

Outcomes

  • Applied postgraduate statistics learning to supervised research work.
  • Learned to distinguish a clean field from a sufficiently defined observation.
  • Built experience supporting, rather than approving, a client's research conclusion.

Decisions in context

My first employment began in July 1997, after the master's completed in June. The forty-five-person employer recorded ₹12 crore FY1998 revenue; my analyst role carried no spending authority or direct reports. I assembled records under a research manager and learned that a numeric field could be technically clean while remaining difficult to interpret. Its unit, period and population needed attention before a useful comparison could be made. The work required me to ask questions without assuming authority over the entire study. A supervising researcher decided the method and client account. That distinction remains relevant in the later career, where greater responsibility does not remove the need for qualified challenge. The early role explains the analytical foundation of the profile. It does not claim that I began with executive judgement already formed, as the averaging error much later would make particularly clear.

Reason for the move

Promoted to research-data manager after sustained analytical work.

What I am looking for next

I would consider an initial outside contribution where a board needs to understand the evidence behind research, subscription products or data-supported business claims. My perspective concerns how populations, definitions, permitted uses and release histories affect what an enterprise can responsibly say. I would first need to understand the company's actual decisions and the specialists who own their interpretation, rather than assume that every data business has the same research problem.

The provisional twenty-two-day estimate includes reading, meetings, travel and exceptional follow-up. It needs review alongside the current executive role and the prospective chair's expectations. My IICA databank registration has not begun; the record also contains no assessment pass or claimed exemption. Preparation, relationships and appointment-specific requirements remain to be examined. A useful first role would offer a clear induction and an honest account of the contribution sought. I would be cautious about an invitation intended merely to endorse a persuasive data claim without access to the definitions, permissions and unresolved questions behind it.
