I would ask what the customer can do differently because of the proposed growth.

My contribution to a board

I could help a board examine what a retail growth proposal changes for the customer and what the available evidence actually establishes. More sites, online activity or a new category can each be strategically useful without supporting every claim made for them. I would ask which shopping task the proposal serves, how that task relates to the existing business and which inference still needs to be tested. The contribution would be a clearer question for management, with the authority of merchandising, operating, financial and technical specialists preserved.

The location programme illustrates the distinction. A list of 140 sites contained 89 existing catchments and 51 new ones. Overlap did not make a site unhelpful, but it meant the map could not simply stand for 140 independent additions to customer reach. I would want the board to hear the convenience argument and the evidence needed to assess it. Selecting sixty locations for further work was a decision about investigation, not an opening result. The commitment should be described at that actual stage.

I would bring an error into that scrutiny as well. I had used an eight-store pilot’s launch-period basket too readily as a steady-state basis before Qirong Wen challenged the comparison. Reassessment cost CNY 3.8 million, and the differing periods did not prove one simple cause for the change. On a board, that experience would make me more receptive to a colleague who asks about the conditions behind an encouraging number, including one I initially find persuasive. I would seek the relevant evidence rather than assume the lower or more cautious interpretation is automatically correct.

Judgement in practice

01

Keep the customer task inside a common-format discussion

The 2016 review covered 260 compact refill locations and 120 destination stock-up stores. I would ask whether a common retail identity requires the same proposition or whether different occasions justify a distinction. The uniformity argument deserves attention because complexity has costs. The selected direction retained CNY 24 million research and format-design expense without claiming an unmeasured sales effect. My board contribution would be to connect the organisational preference with the customer task and seek the commercial owners’ evidence, rather than prescribe an assortment or assume that variety always improves the experience.

02

Do not let channel overlap answer a counterfactual question

CNY 1.1 billion of the CNY 2.4 billion annual online order value came from customers who also shopped in stores. I would ask what that finding shows about channel relationships and what remains unknown about addition or substitution. A shared customer identity does not reveal what would have happened without the online option. The CNY 12 million research and journey-planning programme addressed a question rather than report measured incremental revenue. I would want the board to retain that distinction while considering the strategic value of the channel, with data permissions and technical interpretation kept with their owners.

03

Distinguish the occasion from demand for the proposed response

The 18% gifting finding identified a task reported in the research, not willingness to buy the particular premium-home offer from this retailer. I would ask what the twenty-site trial could teach and which conditions would differ from the proposed 120-site rollout. The CNY 16 million test budget gave the institution a next step without making the survey share a sales forecast. I would preserve the sponsors’ argument about visibility and the opportunity a smaller trial might not reproduce. The board should understand the learning sought and the limits of the selected commitment.

My first year on a board

I would start by learning how the retailer describes its customer occasions and how that account relates to its formats, channels and measures of growth. Familiar labels can mean different things in another business. I would want the commercial and operating teams to explain their actual proposition before relying on analogies from Lanverue. Financial and property induction would clarify the commitments behind a store programme, while technical and data-responsibility induction would establish how the board should interpret customer and channel evidence.

I would examine the relationship between the decision requested and the status of the evidence. A pilot, a survey, a site assessment and a mature operating result should not be treated as interchangeable forms of proof. I could help the chair and management identify where a strategic summary has allowed an inference to become larger than its support. The purpose would be useful scrutiny of existing material, not additional reporting simply to resemble a format I have used before.

Twenty-two days a year would be an initial estimate subject to employer agreement, preparation, committee work and exceptional demands. I would review whether the time remained realistic and whether my contribution complemented the institution’s capabilities. If the role required expertise or availability beyond what I could provide, I would raise that rather than rely on the initial commitment as a reason to leave necessary work unattended.

Conflicts and their management

My employment could create connections with suppliers, landlords, technology partners, consumer brands and competitors relevant to a proposed appointment. I would disclose the pertinent facts and seek the institution’s assessment and appropriate advice. Some relationships might make a seat unsuitable or restrict useful participation. The process would need to recognise changes after appointment, including a new commercial agreement or expansion into a setting where the organisations’ interests intersect.

I would not use individual customer records or confidential commercial research from one business as material for another board or a public website. A real profile should rely on verified, permitted examples and an appropriate level of aggregation. The cases here are invented and contain no actual customer data. The distinction still matters: experience can inform judgement without making every record encountered through employment available for personal use. The proposed contribution needs to remain useful within that boundary.

My independence statement

I would disclose employment, supplier, property, technology-partner and commercial connections for the institution’s assessment. Independence would depend on the actual relationships and applicable circumstances, not the proposed title alone. Employer permission and appropriate advice would precede any acceptance.

The seat I am pursuing

I would consider a first non-executive role in a consumer business whose growth choices would benefit from customer-occasion scrutiny alongside strong financial, commercial and operating expertise. A customer strategy or growth committee could be relevant where its actual remit fits that contribution. I do not claim the qualifications to chair an audit, data, risk or other specialist committee. The institution would need to assess preparation and suitability for the specific responsibility rather than infer them from retail scale.

The chronology records executive presentations since September 2018 and no statutory directorship. The former retail-strategy director title was an employment designation. I would want those facts preserved in a search discussion, together with the learning and conditional time required for a first seat. Every business, person and outcome is fictional, so a real candidacy would need documented experience, permissions and an independent assessment of how the candidate could serve the institution.

Governance learning and readiness

IICA Independent Directors’ Databank: Not yet registered

There is no completed Indian independent-director databank registration in this fictional record. An Indian opportunity would require current preparation and assessment of its particular requirements; no exemption is asserted.

  • I would prepare to examine a growth proposal collectively rather than coordinate its executive presentation.
  • Induction should cover the retailer’s financial reporting, property commitments, customer-data responsibilities and governance duties.
  • I would seek the commercial and operating teams’ account of how each format serves its intended customer occasion.
